Hi there!

I'm am totally retarded about dslr cameras!

Anyone out there who can help me?

I would like to get a dslr for my parents, they're going to egypt the following month.

Would love to make their trip a memorable one.

Well.. here goes..

The kinda camera I'm looking for should be the cheapest amongst it's range.

Able to take close up shots for example, diecast models, food.

Able to snap pretty quick to avoid blurness after the shot.

I've seen my friend's camera and it's shutter speed could be adjusted, and many more!
If those kinda functions could be available within buget it'll be nice.

So far I've went to look at a Sony D290 at Chellenger.

It doesn't have the function of looking at the screen and taking pictures from there, instead, you have to focus into the boxy thing do focus.
The good thing is it does auto focus so I assume by not lookin into the boxy thing I'm also able to take a clear shot because of auto focus? Can I say that?

Ok, I've only seen one camera and the salesman told me it's the latest model so far.

The price is under $700 which i think is pretty reasonable? Or it isn't?

I don't know. Lol.

Well, I think that's all I have to say for now.

Ok, I'll set a budget I guess?
$700

Any recommendations?

Before any comments or suggestions are post, I want to thank those people who are willing to help me, thank you!

Why get a DSLR? You have to appreciate the flexibility gifted by the extra controls u have, which is hard if you don't understand them. No point getting getting a DSLR and shooting auto most of the time. Prosumer camera can also tune shutter speed. And based on your needs, it seems like you are looking for a Point and shoot. Easier for your parents too. Why not try the Canon HS 300. HS = high sensitivity. Their new sensor. Suppose to make low light photography a breeze. That should solve ya "not blur" problem.

i prefer to let my parent have a compact camera instead.
light and easier . . . else they need to spend time adjusting here and there, and still need to take care the lens, cleaning up etc etc . . .

just my 2 cents. :)

I think it is better to get a compact; point and shoot kind of cam for my parents. otherwise it will take much effort to use a dslr effectively.

eg. i have my dslr for 1 mth now. considerably still new to dslr too, and im still trying to figure out some of its features...

your parents know how to use DSLR? and will they mind the heavier body?

at any rate, it's quite okay to shoot in P mode all the way if you're not taking any challenging shots (eg, low light, fast action, long). some pics will turn out bad but you'll prob be happy with at least half. of course, knowing the basics (eg, aperture, shutter speed, iso, exposure) will make your pictures much better. in fact, many compact cameras actually have auto-adjustment functions that DSLRs may not have (eg, shooting against the sun), so that's another thing to consider.

I agree with weegk, it is easier to use a compact than a DSLR.

A friend of mine, who came back from Egypt a few months ago told me that at some places, you are not allow to bring in cameras. But my friend manage to sneak in his camera phone and snap a few pictures.

My friend use a mega zoom (18X) and he manage to get a few shots of people riding camels in front of the pyramid during the sunset. The pictures are excellent.

You have to look into the 'boxy thing' which is called a 'viewfinder' in order to see what you're shooting at. What's the point of autofocus if you can't see what you are focusing on? ;p

I wanna thank you guys for commenting.

But I already have a compact cam.
I've tried setting it to it's fastest and maximum quality it can produce.
Everytime I fidget a little just a second after pushing the button, the quality of the photo would turn out to be blur.
The other thing is that it couldn't really take close up shots, if it is too close to the object, it would turn out blur as well.

I've tried a friend's dslr before, it's a pretty fun thing to have.
It snaps in a quickie and still captures enough light and the quality is amazing.
Fidget a little but still the picture comes out clear.
That's pretty amazing!

My dad owns a dslr long time ago. I believe he will be able to use and look after it when he gets one. Definitely wouldn't mind slinging it around his shoulders or neck.

I really want to thank you guys for commenting but I still insist on getting a dslr.
I may be stubborn but your great help and kindness would be utmost appreciated.

Thanks guys!

sony-alpha-a380-a330-and-a230-dslr-cameras-1.jpg

Sounds like a good idea. Buy a Sony DSLR like the Alpha 230 which can do everything you wanted.

However, buying a DSLR and then using the Auto function which you listed defeats the idea of having so many functions and not using them. A DSLR is not something that you just whip out of your pockets and snap away. Do consider for the long term. What will you be doing with it after you come back from Egypt? :what:

I think a prosumer-bridge superzoom type model would be good. Something like the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 or FZ20? I'm not sure about the models, they might be very old. I personally don't use digital so my knowledge is limited.

A DSLR is usually heavy and the lens rather wide in it's girth. Superzooms are more compact, lighter, can set manual aperture, shutter speeds, iso, wb, etc etc. More convenient, and with a dusty place like Egypt, you don't have to worry about dust or sand getting on the sensor if you change lenses or something.

My mom was a pro photographer at the time when I was still a kid, now she refuses to use any of my SLRs and instead prefers her superzoom.

get a prosumer with manual functions. usually it has a long zoom range like 10x or more.
much more practical the way I see it ...

if you cant control it well, or have bad shooting techniques, SLR or prosumer will still equal blurry pictures... :bsmilie:

if your parents don't know how to use dslr, better to get them a compact.

if you don't believe, just borrow someone's dslr, throw to them to use. unless they are tech-savvy, have some basic photography knowledge, otherwise you are wasting your money.

better to get a decent P&S that is good at pointing and shooting. things like canon ixus series would be suggestable.

ok, but there are compacts and there are compacts.

anyways, if you insist on getting a dslr, then something cheap would be pentax k-x

single kit lens so cheap, can't beat the price.

Able to take close up shots for example, diecast models, food.

Seated at the table, it might be a bit difficult to take close-up detailed shots of food or small items using a DSLR with kit lens.

After reading your post, my first question will be: are your parent familiar with using a DSLR (or SLR)? If not, I don't think it is wise to get one now given they will have only 1 month to get familiarize with it. They better off getting a compact camera with lots of different scenes settings. e.g. landscape, close-up, night scene, etc...

You are a filial son... You mentioned your parent going Egypt, not sure how is the weather condition there, but I think is sandy and windy. Not sure how old and techie are your parent. If they are not, getting a compact cam may be better option as it lessen the stress to figure out how to use a DSLR and furthermore is light to carry. And it will be a waste if they cannot capture some memorable pics when they are at such historic place. I just accompanied my friend to get a Nikon L22 last week, it has good features and the prices is very reasonable. Ofcourse, there are other models to choose, do down to the shop and see for yourself. Or perhaps ask your parent which type of cam they prefer.
COOLPIX L22 - The COOLPIX L22 is equipped with new functions including electronic vibration reduction (VR) that make it easy for anyone to take consistently...

How about the Olympus EPL1, small and light.

And can use iAuto all the way.

Or the Sony Nex 3 or 5.
