MF is tougher on a D40-level body because the viewfinder is smaller and there's no split screen. Quite hard to accurately see focus sometimes, and when the light gets low you can't really rely on the green-dot either.

Solution:

Get a split focusing screen installed in the D40/40/40x for $60. Problem solved.

If your subject gives you the luxury of time to focus, you can try to have fun with MF and make use of those very affordable and great AIS lenses. Else, AFS 35mm, AFS 50mm, Sigma 30mm or Sigma 50mm HSM are your best bet.

my F3, FE2 and FM2n uses matte/fresnel focusing screen

only my leica RF uses split focusing screens

but i still find it as easy...

maybe not on D40 then... is its 95% coverage for the viewfinder?

Yup 95% coverage, 0.8x magnification.

MF with a D40 is seriously a PITA compared to the FM2n...

TS, it's up to you whether you want to

1) MF
2) Change your focusing screen and MF
3) Buy a new body with in-body AF motor
4) Buy a SWM/HSM lens

Option 4 is the easiest and least painful.

I have done (2) on my D40x and can MF my AFD 50 mm 1.8 easily. But a lot of times I still wish that I can auto-focus my lens. The problem is that no budget for (3) or (4) hehe ;p

But for TS, if your budget only allows you that lens just go and get it. Then you can practice by taking photos of your sleeping baby first.
