Walkabout Lens: Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5

hi bro,

i bought the sigma 17-70 as replacemnt to kit lens. it became my permanent lens for 3 years now

- dayshots and bright lights is no problemo!
- quite slow with low light, but i usually resort to flash and iso400-800.
- over time it zoom creeps, but there is a lock
- 72mm filter
- f2.8 is only from 17mm to around 24mm.

like they say, you could check tamron 17-50, very sharp lens but range is short. but the sigma 17-70 is a good buy for me.

sounds good, which one better f4 or f4.5? is it worth the $200 more for the f4 ver?

hi i juz bought this lens, would juz like to comment that this lens without OS cannot compare to 18-55 with IS under same shooting conditions (the larger aperture cannot compensate for a lack of image stabilisation..) hoping to get the OS ver in the near future :) cheers

Hi Ts and All,

I got this lens on for nikon, which the latest version with OS.
It work well with my D300s,somehow when I use it for human of fully zoom and the setting is rite to my prefence. I like the cheesey background, I fully recommend as it can be a good walk ard lens, if u wanna shift over from ur kits.

However the OS version is also come with marco,so is a double way of using the lens.

The latest version on sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 DC MARCO OS.
hope u get urs soon.;)

i am now the owner of both the OS and nonOS lens xD will update with the differences soon

i know i promised a review of both lenses but due to my busy life and after stumbling across this site, i find my analysis (and the website analysis) questionable. either i got a really good copy or the website got a real trash copy of the lens.

i know most of u probably going ard hunting for a review + evidence of the lens performance like me. this website hide this page under some subpage so it was a coincidence that i manage to find it. the review of this lens is not listed in their website summary so i had no idea they did an ISO chart for this lens until today. after clicking and comparing to the 15-85, it performed horribly even at f8 at all focal length. however against 17-85 it performed better. like i said its best to take these with a pinch of salt cos so far the photos i took are rather sharp. will update soon when i hv the time. :P
