I would have to echo Ortega's opinion.
Irrespective of whether it's a fast lens or one with VR, the new batch of Nikon cameras with high ISO capability is the answer to low-light photography. A fast lens usually offers 2-3 stops advantage over kit lens (similarly VR lens as well), which is easily outdone by bumping the ISO higher. Nowadays, I use my 28-105mm for low light with the ISO bumped up to 1600 or higher and it works just as well.
