VR versus fast lens

I would have to echo Ortega's opinion.

Irrespective of whether it's a fast lens or one with VR, the new batch of Nikon cameras with high ISO capability is the answer to low-light photography. A fast lens usually offers 2-3 stops advantage over kit lens (similarly VR lens as well), which is easily outdone by bumping the ISO higher. Nowadays, I use my 28-105mm for low light with the ISO bumped up to 1600 or higher and it works just as well.

Cheers

And also a lot of people left out Flash control.

A fast lens is good for Flash photography because shutter speed no longer dictates exposure, only aperture and ISO.

good info.. now i know the VR doesn't work as good as fast lenses if shooting moving objects :>

VR is good if u are doing panning ;). u want a slower shutter speed for the background blur, but VR will minimise shake on the vertical axis, thus giving u nice smooth panning.
