vitacon uv filter. kena con?

i never heard of vitacon.. anyway, i just wanted to hijack this thread (since we're on UV) to ask if i can leave the uv filter on the lens? thought of using it as protection cuz i almost scratched my lens...

Since UV is nearly completely irrelevant for digital cameras what's left? Indeed, many sales men have discovered that preaching the use of UV filters by telling scary stories about lens damages will result in a nice revenue. I guess the total worldwide sale of UV filters is much higher now than in the times of film (even when normalizing the figure with the total amount of SLR cameras).

wow i havent visited this thread for quite some time, so much activity man. i agree with the guy who says we should build a list of cheat shops. mine was 'camera talk' in sim lim square, the whole reason why i started this thread. i still rmbr when i went back to them to change the filter to a hoya one (rmbr this is 52mm filters we're talking about) they tried to charge me 40 for it. thinking i paid 25 already i would only need to pay another 15, i was okay with taking out the cash (which idiot would pay 40 bucks for a 52mm uv filter man omg) then they told me is 40 bucks TOP UP. that's when i got really pissed and demanded they just change me a good condition filter cause only one in their whole stock of vitacon filters looks okay. the rest have paint peeling, glass chipped etc.

STAY AWAY FROM CAMERA TALK

anyway i think u can still pay for vitacon filters, after all it's still a piece of glass in front of your lens to protect the front element and no i havent had image degradation or what. at most some flare in certain lighting conditions. not recommended, but u can make do if u end up with one. hope to raise awareness from these rip off shops. how come they're able to get away with it??

Guys i experience the same situation is Peninsula Plaza just last week...

The shop is opposite Cathay Photo... i actually wanted to buy from Cathay Photo but its so crowded and i'm in a rush so i decided to pop in to the shop opposite Cathay Photos, well actually it is located 2 doors down opposite Cathay Photo.

While inside i ask for 2 UV lens and i was expecting a well known brand. Instead i was offer 2 lens... one is a Vitacon and the other i can't even see the brand at all. I was told that they are from US and are as good as the common HOYA. I open it up and inspect... everything looks brand new and ok to me. I was given a discount even though i did not ask for it and was quote a final price of $50. Fine with me i pay up and hoping i did not buy something that are worth even cheaper outside.

Then something happen....

The owner wipe out a box of Wide angle convertor with Close up lens... He told me is very popular and alot of ppl buy from him... I was like really??? i took a look and ask for the price... i was quote SGD$250 i was like 'ARE YOU SERIOUS?' i remember seeing similiar thing in Amazon for much less then USD50!!! i say thanks and paid for my lens and left. I know i was being con but too bad. As he was showing me the convertor my card was already swipe.

I mean that shop look 'ok' to me with lots of stock on shelf i mean how bad can his biz be if he is a con and that is why i went in...

Is my instint right? Those convertor don't even worth SGD$250 rite?

I bought a wide angle converter for US$149 in the past. But that was a Fuji and it was made specifically for two camera models. The IQ was also wonderful.

No-brand wide angle converters (including Vitacon), cost less then S$50.

Your filter probably cost $10 only.

Vitacon is a Singaporean brand. They only operate the brand and distribution, and contract other factories to make their stuff. In the profile below... ignore the Japan and S korea part. Most of their stuff now are made in China.
