Viltrox EF to NEX smart adaptor (cheaper china metabones)

I,already sold the adapter. and because the speed is so slow, I won't even buy the metabones. it renders it pointless to use expensive L glass with fast usm motor when it crawls on the a7r.

Has anyone actually had hands on experience with the metabones adapter with the A7R?

Cathay has reserved one for me and i'll be picking it up tomorrow.

Figured that if the AF sucks, i can still use it for my tilt shift lenses.

Actually 2 secs while slow may still be bearable. How long does one takes to manual focus? Anyway, these A7/R probably not the best camera for tracking subjects.

I am looking at this EF-NEX adapter with aperture. However, I do not know if the image circle is FF or the location of the aperture would have any impact on the IQ.

that one is definitely aps-c as well. image circle is similar to the metabones v 1 and 2

someone told me RJ is making a full frame version of their smart adaptor. actually it shld be very easy for viltrox and RJ to make a "full frame" version. they are too slow to cash in on the A7/r craze

Those adapters with their own aperture rings are nonsense in my opinion. Position of the aperture (at least when stopped down) directly affects the way the light rays focuses on the sensor.

Won't be using it for tracking subjects. I've got my 1DX for that.

I will be using the a7r for casual stuff and portraits. So i guess it will be mighty sufficient.

Guess i'll go ahead and pick it up.

Would the adapter be strong enough to hold the lens on its own? I may want to order a RRS L plate for the A7

Then the only feasible adapter at this point is Metabones v3 since the aperture is fly-by-wire.

wow. i just emailed RJ and they have responded almost immediately.

full frame ef convertors are now launched. still quite pricey though at usd 289!

Hi,
Thanks for the message... Yes We have our new version (FF compatible) adapter ready...
http://www.rjcamera.com/ocart/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_63&product_id=82
http://www.rjcamera.com/ocart/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_63&product_id=81
they're basically the same, except the latter has the rotatable (removable) tripod collar, and thus costs $20 more...
We have tested our adapter with EF lenses from 16mm to 200mm... no vignetting.....
if any other questions / comments... please let me know...

At 400usd and slow af, I rather get a cheapo $20 adapter and use FD or EF lenses with aperture rings e.g. samyang lenses and still get FF fov n just use focus peaking :)

Thanks for sharing. I've just ordered one and will post review soon.

Yes i have. I have tested it with the A7R with the Canon 50mm F1.4 USM and the Canon 24-70 F2.8II
While 2 secs is still faster than manual lenses, we're talking about a USD399 adapter on a SGD2799 body with a SGD 2000+ lens and that to me is not acceptable when the AF takes 2 sec at least. Maybe it was dark but still, the 35FE lens didn't have that problem so i'm sure it was the adapter.
It's quite a waste to have a super fast AF lens put onto a camera where the super fast AF becomes super slow.

Not really a surprise, of course it's slow.

That's because he's using a lens designed to work with PDAF on a primarily CDAF/Hybrid AF sensor.

for those still interested in 3rd party adaptors, there are 2 new ones on ebay that can do full frame.

one looks like the RJ one, the other is by Techart.

I've ordered the Techart one which looks promising given that they've provided the functionality of firmware updates by the user. The tripod foot is also directly mountable on arca-swiss compatible tripod heads.

it also helps that the price is a good S$200 lower then the US$399 (S$500) metabones is asking for.

will post reviews when received.

Just curious, why didnt you order the RJ adaptor? I think the rotating collar is kinda useful.

haha not that i don't like the RJ one. but this one has firmware update function, is cheaper at S$289 vs RJ at US$289 and i don't intend to use super heavy tele lenses on the A7, so tripod collar isnt useful for me. Plus the techart itself is arca swiss compatible.

look forward to your review on the RJ adaptor!

Really? I searched ebay and this adapter is SGD706...where you find so cheap? I did find a cheap china made one without any brand for SGD235 from the same shop but the built quality looks bad so i didn't go for it
