Hi experts.

Can somebody explain to dumb me what is "Vignetting". I have a Dimage 7Hi and I am told it happens with filters. I have a Hoya UV on. So what is it and will my filter cause a degradation in pic quality ?

Thanks

My UV filter no vignetting...
but my Circular Polarizer have
this is due to thick filters attached to large lens like 7i / 7hi

Yeah but what is Vignetting plz ?

Vignetting means darkening of the corners of an image relative to its center. It happens to some extent with almost every lens, with wide-angle lenses being the worst offenders. If the fall-off occurs gradually, the viewer may not notice it, and it can even add to the drama of an image, since the lighter center tends to draw the eye inward. In close-up photography with various accessories stacked onto a prime lens, abrupt vignetting can occur, where the light falls off almost to zero very quickly. This makes the image unusable, unless you're willing to crop out the vignetted part.

Hope this helps......

Solution....use low profile filters....or use only one.....dont' stack......

Fantastic responses, thanks. I'll run some tests to see if my 11 bux Hoya UV is causing problems.

Try not to stack filters over the lens. Unless u can't help it. The wider the lens, the more likely the vignetting will occur. Usually vignetting occurs at either end of a zoom. So u might want to check out the widest and longest end of that D7.
