hey guys! anyone heard about this new camera from Black Magic Design? Just wanna hear your views on this. Sounds interesting. 2.5k resolution with 12 bit RAW uncompressed with a price tag around S$3k.Add to that, BMD is giving out davinci resolve and BMD ultrascope.

here's the link to the website: Blackmagic Design: Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Here's the link to my blog article I wrote on this camera: Fadly.M.H.Wychowvski: My take on the Black Magic Design's Digital Cinema Camera

let me know your feedback thanks bros

Built in battery. M4/3. Look like a toaster.

Mac equivalent in the video world lol.

Rather go with the fs 700, but it does have some positives but nt enough to get me on board

For the price, I think it'll be the next big thing given the onboard recording capabilities....but the idea of built in batts sucks, and it looks too refined to be for rugged field operation..

Having said that, I'm definitely getting one as I'm not a big believer of HDSLRs due to the H264 internal recording limitations. I use broadcast ENG cams most of the time, have a 7D rig and I think given the price and budget limitations for most productions these days, the BMD Cinema Cam will be good enough.. :D

Looking at the dusk video and the Leah video, this camera is not big on low-light compared to APS-C, possibly even M4/3. Will need a decent light crew to shoot on this.

Using a cam with good response in low light doesn't mean productions these days no need to use light... :P
I've seen my fair share of people shooting without using even basic 3 point lighting, or even an eyelight for the subject... pardon me for saying this, but footage will just be a technically good, but aesthetically bad picture. :P

now everybody no budget cannot see $ in the eyes hence no need catchlight or any lighting. Just point the camera and start rolling.

FS700 is more than double if not triple the price of BMD Cinema Cam. Want to buy BMW, why look at Toyota brochure?

that's funny. I'm not even looking at the toyota brochure in the first place. :D

Low light doesn't mean no light. We are seeing a new generation of dslr shooter who doesn't light because their lens say f1.4 and their camera ISO say 1000000000...

Lighting is not only just for exposure.

I guess lighting usage depends on 2 things.

1. Type of event. Some events just doesn't allow you the time to set up lightings. Example, weddings, church (quite many do not allow usage of external lights). You are definately screwed with the blackmagic's native 320iso.

2. Budget/Manpower. Some videographers cannot afford to have a light grip or carry those lights themselves cause they are already carrying sliders, Stablizers, etc.

Nowadays, I have 2 assistants when I shoot. Both double up as videographer, light grip, sound grip and to help me lug my 20kg equipment around so i always have my array of gears. But I didn't have this a year plus back due to clients budget. So if i follow the theory that some of you guys are saying, i might not be at my state now cause I won't be able to pick up lots of jobs that are run and gun + can only afford 1 videographer.

I hope this clears up to some experience folks out here that many shooters don't use light NOT because their camera is at f1.4 and 1000000iso. It's because the job/budget doesn't permit it.

Stop the theories, equipments only assist you to tell the story. Lost in translation was shot mostly with natural light anyways and it doesn't affect the great story told.

Peace.

too bad no f-mount. I losing passion for Nikon. FS100/700 is nice, but costs more. I contemplated on fs100 until NAB annouced 700, but still, highly compressed long GOP.

waiting for 2nd Gen BMD camera with more than Da Vinci Resolve thrown in. hopefully a 4k sensor since 4k is big at NAB this year. I gave up my 2nd Queue-preorder on this. SAve my $ find job/ more freelance first.

yeah..i was disappointed with the lack of options for F-Mount too

It's a great Idea this camera... However the Japanese spend millions and take years for Research and Development of their cameras. Not even the Koreans dare to try to venture in this. Will just have to wait and see

Cathay Photos is accepting pre-orders now if anyone interested.

Are they gonna fix the onboard battery situation? is there a way to run batts through the A/C power plug like the Swit batts for Ex-3? Blackmagic singapore should have a demo session

WHY just use adapter what. 2/3 of my lenses on my 5d video setup are nikkor glass. either way its gonna be manual focus.

on another point i watched a couple of videos that has mentioned it only has 3 iso settings. 320 800 and 1600.

The form factor is wrong. This is not suitable for run and gun type of events work. Only for tvcs and dramas.

So far from the reviews and comparison ...

RAW is so far far away from compress footages like AVCHD or H264 in Canon or Nikons. The images of shooting directly into the sun is so much better with BMC.

The dynamic range is so awesomely better and all those stuff that are washed out in 5D2/3 are clear in the BMC.

The biggest problem with the BMC (other than battery & ergonomics) so far from reviews are:

1. Rainbow Moire (OMG, how can that happen in a RAW camera. Basically meaning you can't use it for broadcast?)
2. 2.3X Crop factor (Killing any possibility for 14mm Ultra Wide Angle, Depends on what you shoot but it sucks if you need ultra wide shots which some jobs require)
3. Cannot delete from SSD (I'm not sure but i heard you can't delete footages shot directly on camera?)
4. Reflective Screen (This doesn't make sense, are they creating iphone for games here?)
5. No meters or f-stop or focus peaking showing on the screen. (I mean they created a big touch screen and could have just added a little more details to show stuff on the fly)

Hope to see improvement over this and hopefully a APSC sensor with 1.6x crop too.

Will wait for the next version and see what happens along the way.
