hi fellows, i have a question on which video properties to use when i am editing my videos in Vegas. i notice that when i use the PAL template, my videos at the preview screen are noticeably not as sharp/clear as when i am using the NTSC template. May i know if its the problem with the framerate difference between PAL and NTSC?

And will i have problem with the finished dvd playing in singapore if i use either PAL or NTSC format for edit?

Thanks so much for any help over here as i am very much a newbie in video editing especially using Vegas.

Hi landar. You didn't actually say what format your footage is in, but as a rule you should stay with that. The Vegas preview screen may not be a good guide to final quality. Try to burn a test DVD, just a few minutes duration, and see what that looks like. If your footage is PAL then make a PAL DVD. If you still have doubts make 2 test DVDs, one PAL and one NTSC, and then compare them.

hi jaegersing, thanks for your reply, i am using a sony dv cam to shoot my video and upon reading my cam's manual, its a PAL cam so i assume the footage is shot in PAL format if thats what its meant by the footage format?

Using your instructions, i have tested 2 versions of the test dvd, one rendered in PAL format, the other rendered in NTSC format and weird as it may seem, the ntsc results in a clearer/sharper images while the PAL version comes with 'horizontal noises' within the video especially when theres fast motion.

If that is the case, i was wondering if i will have problem playing the rendered NTSC dvd in dvd players over here in Singapore i have read singapore uses the PAL standard.

Thanks so much for your patient help and anyone kind enough to leave a note as i am pretty much a novice in video editing. Thanks.

PAL video for DV is at 720x576, 25 frames per sec.
NTSC video for DV is at 720x480, 30 frames per sec.

You should stick with settings at PAL DV throughout your editing & mastering to DVD since your cam is a PAL camera.

There must be some settings wrong in your workflow that caused the horizontal banding problem in the PAL DVD that you've authored. Make your all your video & exporting settings comply to the PAL standards.

The US adopt the NTSC format while Singapore uses PAL format. If you want to use the DVD in SG, then you should stick to PAL format. But playback will be a problem in US... that's normal.

Thanks DXNmedia, wendy for the information, i will stick to PAL standards and try to see which part of the workflow that i have gotten wrong with. Thanks!
