video mode of Nikon D3100 vs Sony DSLTs

Anybody have any idea how the Panasonic cameras (e.g GF1, G2 or GH2) does their video recording ?

Same as C or N or S ?

Thanks !

the m43 are using the slow contrast detection af of cos.

only sony a33 and a55 is good enough to use phase detechion af.

Hi guys, the "rubber band" thingy of the D3100 is due to the Contrast Detect AF. It can be fast. But Contrast Detect works by having a little bit of "over shooting" :) It works by changing the focusing, until circle of confusion becomes the smallest, but it has to overshoot the sharpest point a bit so the camera knows that the previous focus distance was the sharpest. Phase detect doesn't require overshooting, so hence the difference in AF performance, and also the main reason that the DSLT, which retains Phase Detect focus (PDAF), is able to track more stably than her CDAF counterparts. :)

thats why phase detection is better for most situation, and definitely MUCH faster.

Contrast detection AF in video mode gives me a headache, seeing the focusing point keep going front and back focus makes me dizzy :bsmilie:

take a look at Canon 60D's live view focusing speed! :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

As with Nikon's 3100, the canon 60D is also using contrast detection in live view (and video), and it suffers from the irritating front/back focusing symptom. Pretty annoying. And it seems that the 60D's contrast detection is even slower than the Nikon D3100's

This is the D3100's video, taking from the beginning of this thread

Can see the annoying focusing. You can watch the other video, which shows the rubberband effect that contrast detection has.

And after u finished watching the 2 videos above, u can watch how Sony DSLT's Phase detection works.

the 60D video see liao head giddy giddy..

the 60D video see liao head giddy giddy..

its only good for still life, non moving videos, where the focus is already locked on.

If u do a search on youtube, u will find that all 60D videos are non moving videos (as in focus is locked and doesnt change). I only managed to find this video where the user attempts to shift focus, and then I can see how slow the focusing speed is. I guess thats why no one ever bothers to post video clips of 60D trying to track moving objects :bsmilie:

wow the focusing of both 60D and D3100 is bad (in video mode) minus the sound of the AF but the AF hunts it's bad I have not seen that in my A33

Same here, so no hurry to get A33/A55. But if A77 come out, then I may buy it to replace my A550, :)

hope the a77 have much bigger grip.. the a33/a55 grip turned me off instantly.. too small for my hands.. a550 is much better..;)

As a semi pro, the A77 will definitely be a bigger camera. More room for Sony to put in additional features and more buttons too.

if A77 has semi pro features and control I think I might get it lols (just kidding)

It is really ironical that at one stage, Sony (A major video equipment manufacturing company) was losing market shares because the Alpha mount cameras did not have video recording capabilities.

Things have certainly turned around since Sony flexed her muscles and released the SLT cameras which now have the best video capabilities for the price.

I don't think the A33/A55 was built to compete against the 60D and D3100, (Sony has the A560/A580 for that) ...rather, I believe the SLT were meant to challenge Panasonic (Sony's traditional competitor in the video market) release of their G2 and the GH2 which is why the A33/A55 are so small.

For me, just as the APS-C sensor can never beat a FF sensor, a 4/3 sensor cannot overtake an APS-C sensor ...this is a case where bigger is always better ! :bsmilie:

I don't think Sony expected the success of their Nex cameras but they have certainly scrutinised it and found that being able to adapt ANY lens in the world is a major advantage in promoting the sales of the Nex bodies (Having an APS-C sensor inside helped) ...I wouldn't be surprised the next few generations of Nex would have FF sensors !

Coming back to the SLT, Sony must have seen an incredible take-up rate (perhaps in their Japanese domestic markets) that made them decide to make the A700 replacement a SLT design. Sony must have been confident that the current A33/A55 users being used to the SLT concept will be more willing to accept the A77 as an upgrade, thus the market for the A77 advance concept camera has already been paved.

...Sorry, I must have drank something earlier :bsmilie: ...I'm usually not that long-winded ! :embrass:

I'll enjoy my A33 for now... and see how it goes from there lols there are time I've miss the full control and fine tuning my E620 has. A lt of Oly user was frustrated using it coz of the IQ but when you fine tune it it produces very good photos... A33/A55 are very god cam just the missing those fine tuning capabilities... let see how A77 would looks like hehe:sweat:

Those who had used or tried A700 before will know what goodies A77 would bring.

A77 is supposedly a A700 body with A55 features, upgraded with new sensor, new af, new processor and some exciting new features that will wow the apsc market.

I am sure its the D7000/D300s and 7D killer.

bro your a very bad BBB virus carrier:nono: the product not yet release you're spreading the BBB virus already:sweatsm:

Sony did mentioned that the A77 wont be just a A55 with better body and improved controls. They mentioned that besides the above, the A77 will have even more features than the A55.
