Video Class for 15 Year Old

My son has been making stop motion videos on his handphone for the past few years and we thought it would be good to enroll him into a beginners class for him to learn the 'right' ways of making videos as well as to keep him occupied during the March school holidays.

There is one called Lab School but I'm not sure if they have classes for an absolute beginner. Also it's $450 for a one-day class which seems quite steep for absolute beginners.

Any advice, comments, suggestions will be appreciated.

Kids nowadays are so into technology and they pick up gadgets/apps so quickly. Some secondary schools are already teaching their students professional editing software like final cut pro. I don't know of any cheap or really entry courses but maybe you could look into community centres. But my point is you might be a bit too conservative in enrolling him for an "absolute beginner" class.

Many thanks tengo. I don't really know what his computer skills level is at but he has never attempted to edit any of his videos shot on his handphone - most of his time is spent on online gaming. I guess sending him to a absolute beginners course will probably allow us to gauge his actual skills level.

Any other suggestions?

lab school as in the one stefano virgilli manages is it? if yes, why don't you go for his free talks first and ask him personally? but i have to agree that the price is quite steep..

Yep, with Stefano Virgilli according to the website. Any way already signed up so let's see what happens.

he's a photoshop expert, from what i know.. but the school itself is more of a creative media school kind.. actually i got a voucher which i don't think i will use.. anyone interested in the voucher can PM me.. i can give it to you..

but in my opinion, if you want to enroll, just go for one of his talks first, then you can ask him directly.. he's quite a nice and approachable guy.. if you wanna know about the talks can go to facebook, search for creative crew..

(note: i am in no way related to stefano/creative crew, i just wanna help out everyone here.. cheers)

If only this thread was started a couple weeks ago!

I run the post production department, and teach Graduate Film at NYU Tisch Asia in Singapore. New York University's film program is considered one of the best in the world, and count among our alumni many famous directors and oscar award winners (some of them are in our faculty as well). While all of our students here are Masters Degree candidates, we run two special programs in Singapore for high-school students interested in filmmaking.

One, Future Filmmakers, is for Singaporean High-School Students only, and is completely merit based. We have an interview with each candidate, and if accepted, 16 students will take a 12 week program each saturday in film production at our Singapore Campus. The cost is completely free, we run this program to support young filmmakers in Singapore since this our home now. In fact we give a small cash award to the top three students to fund their first film after we finish the course. This program in New York is sponsored by Bill Cosby, but we're still looking for a local patron here. Unfortunately the deadline for this program passed only two weeks ago! However, make sure your son applies for next year.
More information can be found at our website here.

The second program, Summer High School is tuition based, and is mainly geared for foreign students to come to Singapore to learn filmmaking and asian culture, however Singaporeans are perfectly welcome to join. This is a month long intensive program, and the students actually are required to live in our dorms, and eat, drink and study filmmaking 24/7 in collaboration with other children. This program is still open, but the tuition cost is about $10,000 US. You can find out more information about this program here.

We are still very new to Singapore (only opened in 2007), and our publicity for these programs hasn't been very extensive. I hope this helps.

Hi JaiYenJohn

Good to know. Now I know that if ever my son wants to take up filmmaking more seriously, I will know who to contact.

The replies and information have been most useful. Thank you people, and CS.

I've stumbled upon this website online - kwn.com.sg/KWNOverview02.html - and realised that students are able to sign up for video production course in Singapore schools nowadays. This program has been running for 8 years now! The students get to compete internationally if their videos receive awards.

It is good to know that kids these days are picking up skills such as photography and videography and given the opportunity to bloom in these areas. :D
