Hi guys,

I decided to venture into 35mm film after several years of digital.., not really changing completely but to rather to enjoy "that" feeling..

I have never bought films before, so could someone advise me on what films to buy and where could i get it? Looking at anywhere near bishan eg. J8.

I would be mainly shooting colour, but also looking for B/w films.

Cheers.

So you want to wet your head? Haha

hi....

j8 downstairs, between cobbler and sweets shop is a photo shop.
they sell color as well as kodak 400cn which is c41 film.

good luck.

Oh thanks!
Any idea how much it would be to convert the negatives to digital format?

Cheers.

It's better to buy your own scanner. I had fujifilm scanned my film before but the resolution is not that large. It cost 9sgd for one roll of film. So i bought a film scanner at tangs@orchard. Cost 170sgd. I was able to scan 5megapixel resolution images in tiff/jpeg format. But i think there's a lot of other maybe cheap scanner out there. I just bought mine on impulse.

For the film, i have it develop in fujifilm. It cost me 4sgd for a roll of film. You can have the film develop but not printed. I think they call it "D.O." im not sure what it stands for. Then scan it on your own scanner.

Im not endorsing fujiilm but its the only photo shop im familiar of. I dont know much places here in singapore developing film. Maybe if anyone can also tell me other shops developing film then i would also be glad to hear you. :)

The best place to develop IMHO is TripleD photo at burlinton square near simlim. Good price and very very friendly service there. If you're a member from lomotionsg forum you get a 10% when you mention your forum nick. Price for 35mm is 3 for develop only. + 5 for scanning per roll for colour processing. they sell lots of film and they stock expired stuff too! which is great if you;re just starting out as expired film is around 40% cheaper. I recommend you skip kodak gold totally, the most boring film ever and its expensive as well. Hope that helps =)

@shadowleong

Thanks a lot sir. Now that you mentioned it, i will go there after i finish a few rolls of film. Thanks for the advice. Im starting film as well and i used kodak gold. Im not so much familiar with films and suggestions from you will be much appreciated. :)

No specials just try what you can afford and see what you like! Haha! My fave are prob solaris 400, alfa vista, for c41, B&W try tmax or trix Have fun!

My favourite films are

colour:
Fuji Pro 160S - a very artsy, emo, low saturation kind of look. very nice for creating moods
Fuji pro 160C - punchy, very very lively. colours are saturated, but not overly so

black and white:
ilford hp5+ buy this in a bulk roll and you ll have 20 rolls for only half the price. very versatile, can push to 800, 1600 with good results. 3200 also can but havent tried.
ilford delta 100 very solid tones but with nice transitions too.
fuji across 100, about same as delta 100.
ilford panF+ 50. abit hard to use, but the resolution is incredible. dynamic range seemed abit limited though, very contrasty.

i would skip fuji reala, but superia 200 is decent for just playing around.

I'm a big fan of Ilford Delta 3200 film and Tri-X 400 for B&W. I can push/pull by Tri-X and use it as 200, 400 or 800 film, and I can pull my Delta 3200 and shoot at 1600 or at 3200. Film has a look that's hard to beat and it even looks good when it's shot badly (to a point)

Been looking for Fuji films but I can't get them here in Dubai, so I usually shoot with Kodak Portra 160

Thanks for the input guys! :) now i have a list of film to try. Shooting film is fun.
