I suspect the fill in on the far side of the face used in the shoot thru example above was from the wall.

I agree that bounce light has a wrap around effect. The shoot thru has uneven lighting, can be good sometimes.

curious. why 4 flashes ? one not powerful enuff ?

It depends on the light intensity of the ambience. You need more power at noon time than you would at night.

What is the difference between 1x SB 28 at full power and 4x SB 28 at 1/4 power ?

They are 4 heads, 4 positions and a lot faster flash duration and flash recycle rate.
