Hi,

Wondering if any of you have an idea what's the price to pay now for a used M6 classic in excellent condition, i.e. no dents or nicks, normal chrome wear acceptable.

Have been snooping around eBay and the prices seems alright, around the USD 1,100 to USD1,300 which works out to SGD1,870 to SGD2,270. Not sure if I have got the numbers correct though; never bought on eBay before.

The last I have seen, the lowest of any M6 classic that fit the above conditions, minimally goes from SGD2,400 or above in the usual 2nd hand shops around City Hall.

Anyone like to share their experiences?

Getting things from e-bay, especially from foreign countries, you will need to factor in shipping & handling charges and possibly custom as well. Typical prices for a decent M6 non-TTL here in the UK is also around SGD2400 (£800).

one thing I learnt from buying from ebay is that their "excellent" is not the same as what we describe as excellent there.

to them if it is working with no problem it is usually "excellent++"

having scratches (use marks) on the body is taken as "understood"

:p

Hmm....

I guess the real question I have is that are Singapore prices reasonable, considering that the new MP/M7s are out and I guess that there would be people who are upgrading. Buying without first seeing definitely has its risks.

A brand new or mint condition M6 Classic is hard to come by this day.

There's certain risk factor when buying from eBay. Always email seller to reconfirm the condition of the camera you intent to bid.

Price range from USD$1100 - USD$1350 + shipping & Handling USD$60 est.

There are also other charges you need to include, example Bank TT charges or other money transfer service charges.

Wow! Looks like its not much of a diff between Sgp and eBay!

By the way, any reason why the Classics are so hard to come by? Would the TTLs be more available?

Hi chgoh,

I just got my hands on a M6 classic LNIB (like new in box) condition last month from a 2nd hand shop in the City Hall area.. I think the previous owner never/ or ran very few films thru it. There was absolutely no wear on it at all. FOr a good price of $2.5k. So new that I couldn't believe it.
The shop owner mentioned that the previous owner bought it as a spare.

I decided against buying from e-bay cos of the amount involved and can't view the goods first.

Even in Singapore, my friend has some bad experience with used M6s. The infinity focus was good but it was out for close focusing. He Only found out after he test shot it. That was why I decided not to buy from e-bay and for reasons mentioned by rueyloon.

If you're patient enough and if you can find a seller who is realistic, I think it may not be difficult to get one under 2K. I got mine from a CSer with a mint 50 cron for (IMHO) a decent price. The only 'flaw' I have to put up with is a scratched bottom plate.

2.5k a good price? kidding right?

New M7/MP cost in the region of 4.3K-4.4K.
M6 Classics used to cost 3.3K - 3.4K

So relatively, a LNIB M6 @ 2.5K is a good buy.

Welcome to the world of Leica! ;)

Both their M-System and R-System cost a lot more...
I'm receiving a new R9 with 3 lenses (35/2,50/2 & 90/2 APO) on one-week loan from the Lecia Specialist in London for evaluation but imagine having to pay 4900GBP (approx. 15,000 SGD) for this manual/electronic SLR and 3 primes!

Joseph Yao of HK is coming to town this week.. and he's a renowned Leica distributor.. perhaps you could email him to hand carry some over to singapore. That way you save shipping costs and guaranteed quality? :)

Well, we risk going over the edge on this! But I think the Nikon and Canon stuff are not far behind. Imagine a F5 cost in the 3.3K region, Nikkors AFS zooms are in the 2.5K-3K region. So I guess a Leica M is justifiable!

Ahhh... but the Leicas are all manual, including the lenses - Leica hasn't gone AF yet! But I have to say though comparing my Nikon kit to my Leica kit, Leica is definitely more solidly built, especially the lenses - hence the cost. Anyhow, we're digressing here...

Hi Cash,

IT was a good price for me. I wanted a new pc if there was any available but unfortunately couldn't find any.

I know some M6s can be bought for lesser than what I paid for but the condition of the M6s was not to my expectation. My friend paid about 2.3k for his M6 but because of the near focusing problem he had to sell it off for a loss. Getting rid of it was one option to kill the pain. Else he had to send it for repair.

IMO, no point for me to lose $$$ like tat. So better to get a pc that I like for a start.

Hi

rather than buy from ebay, why not try the photo.net Leica users forum and the LUG (Leica Users Group) mailing list...these guys put up items for sale every friday and i believe they are more reliable than buying from ebay. eps if u buy from someone who is a regular in those forum / mailing list.

Some of the US retailers advertise their services on the LUG, and the prices are very good. I manage to find a reliable and reputable US dealer selling 0.58x black paint MPs and 0.85x black paint MPs for prices only slightly higher than the regular MPs, and the guy is quick and responsive in his email replies.

i think ebay should be a last resort, unless u're an experienced ebay-er (like greg and simon  )

Hi

btw is there a need for a M6 classic? why not consider a NEW gray market M6TTL? I have no idea how much they cost now, but i got mine 2 yrs ago in 2002 for only $2800, which is not much more than $2.5....... and its new, not second hand!

m6ttls have more sensitive light meters compared to the early M6s. Latter M6s have the same sensitive meter, but u got to know how to differentiate the serial numbers.

Red Dawn,

Hmmm.. Did you get your M6TTL in 2002 in Sgp, HK or the Internet (from some reputable Leica dealer)?
