why portraits? i thought should use wide angle lens? if use at 55mm then i need stand quite far frm the subject isnt it?

yup, do some research on portrait photography and you'll learn that, generally, you should be at least 3-5m away from a subject ;) Too close, and body/facial features will get distorted in an unnatural fashion.

Besides, i don't think most people can hold a 'natural' expression with a camera shoved close to their face right? :bsmilie:

You might also wanna check pictures taken with the Canon 85mm 1.2L on flickr :)

That is a delicious portrait lens :)

I've seen some people using like >200mm primes for portraiture as well, search flickr. Those can get uber awesome....

potraits it be nice to use 85 or 105mm which the 44-200 is able to do. being quite a slow lens, doing portraits instead of action photography should be perfect =) longer range so the subject or person will not feel pressure cus if you use say 18mm you be breathing down his/her face liao :D

btw, i used to owe the 55-200, it takes excellent portraits. you might consider the 85mm delicated lens but 55-200 will do.

Check out the portraits shot and the equipment used. Most of the time you don't get good bokeh with wideangle lenses. Also you may see warping on the sides; not good to see a human warp.

I'm sure that lens will be fine. You could consider a 50mm 1.8 or even 1.4 if you are really into portraiture; the 50mm x1.5 = 75mm, and the 1.8 or 1.4 should produce really nice bokeh (see flickr)

of cos your setup is gd for portraits. i think the range seems pretty decent plus got VR :P:P:P

i was thinking of replacing the 18-55mm and 55-200mm VR with the 18-105mm VR because i dun need such a close zoom, at least for now.. and the 18-105mm covers 18-55mm as well so i just need 1 lens to go ard basing on my needs right now..

still on the see-saw over the 55-200mm VR, keep or sell it.. its still quite new or rather very new..

edit: i am using D40+18-55mm right now.. 18-105mm VR will replace the kit lens now.

Sell your lenses now. Before the price drops any further.

selling it $370(neg) in marketplace but no takers now =(

should i try selling it to shops?

55-200 VR 370 abit hard to sell. haha i think $340-350. i guess its really new. shops will offer you even lower price

its really new. the most is only used 3 times since i bought it abt 3 weeks ago..

i agree. 55-200 at 370 is way too high. even 300 is way too high. the selling range for 2nd hand (even for 10/10 condition 55-200 VR) is at around 270 the most...
370...top up a bit more can get the lens at first hand.

do consider :)

I am having the same problem now too.....

which one to bring to my trip to Japan soon.... :dunno:
18-55mm or 55-200mm??

is a family trip, so lot of shoot on people but I also want to shoot the scenery.......so how?
am not for it to bring both......

Just bring the 18-55 if you really have to choose, I use that range the most when overseas as well.

An honest selling price would be in the 300 region - pending condition, it's not "way too high" lah.

I have been monitoring this thread for quite sometime now, and I guess we have much in common.

I'm using D40 + kit lens 18-55mm + 55-200mm non-VR + Sigma 70-300mm APO DG macro + 50mm AIs f/1.4

I've bought the refurbished 55-200mm via vPost USA for < 200 SGD and I've no complaints - yet. In fact whats there to complain, since I've been "forcing" myself to use what I got, rather than to keep thinking other lens would do me good. Thats how I curb my BBB virus, at least for now; esp there are more important things in mind. While I've been using the kit lens a lot - abusing it rather - I would somedays just attach my 55-200 and get shots out of it. Make the lens to work with the surrounding; not the other way round; thats how I learn to fully maximise the lens. About changing lens, there's no issue at all. Can always take my time, if there's a missed chance, there's always another in the wait.

My kit lens been used mainly for landscapes, i would only change to my 55-200 when I've enough of the big picture. There is always enough time, whats the rush for?

Here's one group I join - http://flickr.com/groups/633354@N23/
