I would take the D700 too.. Feel that D3 is overkill for mine usage. D700 is lighter and cheaper and if i need the D3 "look" just get a grip. Concentrate on better lenses is more worthwhile as good lenses will not depreciate but body will.. Keke.. Feel happy and great for the TS as his spouse and money is not an issue and can get anything he desires.

think D700 + batt grip look taller than D3...

like oversize??

go get D3 if you got the marnee to spend :P

Check out the table of the 3....the double CF and Kevlar shutter are already a winner on the D3....not to forget the endless battery juice and machine gun shooting.....if your livelihood depending on the camera....the $3k extra is nothing

that is IF it's your livelihood

if not, i think D700 will suffice, only minus the dual CF feed and the 9 FPS on FX

the battery grip can fit the EN-EL4 which is the one the D3 uses, and grip makes it go 8FPS

i think the only thing is the "built-in grip", better weather seal and dual CF feed.

D3 is alot of different from D700 is a good camera get the D3.

Hi TS, if you haven't decided on your purchase, maybe it's worth to wait for the new FX body (D700x??) which should be due soon according to Thom Hogan (www.bythom.com).

For D3 & D700, personally I think D3 has a (very) slightly nicer colour and more accurate exposure than D700. If I recall correctly, D3's shutter sound is slightly softer than D700, which is useful for shooting at quiet place or on the street. However, in terms of sharpness, image clarity and high ISO performance, D700 is certainly on par with D3. Like other CSers have mentioned, the several features unique in D700, such as the dust removal mechanism, built-in flash and detachable grip, are very convenient stuffs which I value a lot (I'm a D700 user :)) As for the shooting speed, it is a good-to-have feature for me. But for you, it really depends on whether you need it for your application or not.

Both D3 & D700 are very capable cameras sharing the similar sensor but mechanically built and targeted for different purposes and market segment. I do recognise that when photography is a hobby, or an indulgence, what really matters is which choice will yield the highest feel-good factor. Hence, please go with your heart and be no regrets with whatever you have chosen! Afterall, camera body is like a car, the moment you bought it, it devalues...

Come on... its a D3. People don't have to hear the shutter to know that you are around. BTW, the shutter's is quiet and identical to D700. Its the mirror slap that gives you away.

and...

there is reason to believe that the D700x, if it were to come, will be priced at a higher level than the D700 is going for currently.

Oh you are right, it's the mirror slap... D700's one is loud :)

Hi Jonnodotsg, i tend to shoot kids primarily, some travel photography but even then mostly people. I am getting into studio as well... still not tried macro.
I completed almost all the courses at the Photographic Society of Singapore and am now comtemplating the distance learning course offered through the New York Institute of Photography. Ultimately this will still most likely end up being a just a hobby and not a profession... :)
To sum it up... I quite enjoy taking people in natural light and studio.

Good to hear that you spend time and effort to attend courses to improve your skills.

I know many folks who think that better cam and lenses would give them great pictures.

You know, whenever someone post a fabulous picture, another one would come in and ask what lens did you use.... :bsmilie:

I wonder if TS has gotten the camera after so much discussion :dunno:

Bro, just my two cents worth. I own a D3 previously and felt that the only minus point it has is the lack of sensor cleaning function which D700 has. Apart from this and the obvious reason of slower fps, D700 has met most, if not all my requirements as my focus is usually at still objects which do not require high fps. Hence, like what the rest have said, save up the $2k plus and go for lenses.
