Upgrade to D3?

Your response is quite defensive.
The advice I received through this thread has helped me a lot... some more that others I must say.
The fact that money is not an issue was stated to focus on functionality. Perhaps you missed that?

not defensive. just the way i talk. and just tt its very obvious your decision is fixed on D3. and it appears you are juz seeking for confirmation.

functionality is one thing. do bear in mind that if its just for family shots the occasional event, weight is a factor to consider.

True. But, I think TS is going for the better of the two, which is D3.

Go for the D3...You will love the ISO and faster AF performance.:)

Hi, yesterday i just bought the D700.

i testing from DX and FX ISO and Sharpness.

you all can see here is got difference.

can see more details from FX sensor.

How you tell there's more detail when the magnification is different?

haha i have my bet on TS getting D3 soon.. :bsmilie::bsmilie:

I intend to sell my D300 and SB800 because I have no use for it once I upgrade.

Eh... why wouldn't you need the SB800 when you upgrade to FX??

Eh... why wouldn't you need the SB800 when you upgrade to FX??

because most people, have the notion that Speedlights are useless when u have a FX body. :dunno:
frankly that's crap. TS keep the flash. you have no idea how important the flash is.

All,

ok... now i'm outright curious.

The difference has been described as "nearly the same", "kick", "beast", "pro build"...

The question I have is ... what would I miss out if I purchased the D700 vs the D3?

For simplicity, lets leave out the price difference.

geeteethree pointed out:
D3: No dust removal(-), No built in flash (-), Heavier (-), Built in Battery Grip (+), Higher frame Rate (9 -11(dx format) to 8 (w/battery grip) (+), Slightly faster AF (+), Dual CF card (+)

Anything else?

Thanks!

Use of PCE lenses without fear of damaging the body for the D3 (+1).

stop buying, start shooting!

bro, it appears from your description that you are mostly into portraiture work. as such, i would reckon that you probably wouldn't require the speed of a D3. should you get one, you will essentially be paying a premium for features that would make little, if any, difference in the kinda shots you take.

50mm 1.4D and 24-70mm 2.8G means street candid and portraiture ba. If street candid, won't it be wise to get something lighter. Though I don't like camera that are too light as the feel when handling such camera are funny especially witha telephoto lens. After reading the advice posted, I would suggest D700 with a battery grip (put into consideration that you are a portraiture shooter). If I take D700, the spare 2K can be used for a flash, a battery grip, flash equipment (good diffuser etc), telephoto lens, a good solid tripod and spare for a good dinner with family/ friend.......

Why are you taking pleasure in stalking TS's posts? You don't have to knock others if they can afford a FX.

Agreed acpical, we really don't need to do so. He is just asking for advice about differences in functionality of a D3 and D700 from those who have hands on experience on them. Leave the decision of whether it is worthwhile to him. That's a personal decision and should be respected even though you do not agree.

Getting kinda hot in here. Anyway, to each his/her own.
This is my humble opinion of things. When I wanted to get a D90, a good friend of mine adviced me against it and told me to get a really good pns instead as my photos don't seem to justify getting a DSLR. He told me that whatever I think I can do on a DSLR, I can do on a good pns. My view, of course differs. I want to get a D90 so that I can take better photos, I wanted to explore more manual functions and of course to take photos with differing perspective using different lenses. So in the end, I went ahead with the buy and shoot, shoot and shoot. And of course, our views do not differ much nowadays. What I can do on a D90 is much more that what I can do on a pns.

TS, if you think that you can take better photos on a D3 rather than a D700, you can achieve it. Don't doubt the decision, go buy and shoot.

The other CSers are providing an opinion based on their own personal experience, and it is also a fact that lenses last a great deal longer than bodies especially in this digital age, so naturally they would like to suggest you buy a D700 and spend the extra money on lenses, and do your body upgrading over the years.

You set up the thread and you can decide when to end it also. In the end, the decision has always been yours to make.

because most people, have the notion that Speedlights are useless when u have a FX body. :dunno:

thats cos you're an event photographer...

i never use flash, DX or FX

but i believe, with an FX body or even the D300

the flash is redundant but not for you

because you're a sport/ event photographer while i am a street photograher

I guess all of you have got a point of his own. Well, it is up to the TS to evaluate. I think we are going OT....

Cool

Eh... why wouldn't you need the SB800 when you upgrade to FX??

This is beyond the topic of the thread, but since you asked...
I am getting a deal on a D3 + SB900 or D700 + SB900.

I have no need for the D300 + SB800 becuase:
1) I do not need 2 bodies
and 2) Only one set will fit in my dry box.

I hope this doesn't upset some folks on why I am letting go of my SB800 !!! :o

I am not price insensitive guys, just someone who is allowed by the missus to indulge myself in one vice ie. photography.

Certainly hope to do justice to the D3 :) I am very gratfeul to the passion demonstrated on this thread in the past few days. For good or bad, we only respond when we care... Thanks!

So you've decided on a D3??
hmmmmmm, it's a great cam :)

You've already got a large collection of lenses and accessories, so I would imagine that the extra $ saved from getting D700 instead of D3 is 'unnecessary' (if $ is ever unnecessary... haha) for getting extra gear.

I reckon the weight is a biggest factor though. Already many ppl complain about D700's weight after prolonged use. D3 would be even worse. There's nothing worse than a great camera left at home... but if the weight and price is ok by you, GO FOR IT!

if you've decided on the D3, good for you

if you've decided on the D700, even better for you

because you've a great cam with a little spare cash to get some nice lens,

whereas if you get the D3 you'd be rather tight, unless you found extra cash or already have some lenses

Since you ask, my gear:

Nikon F2 (1971) - I use red25 filters for B&W film shots
Nikkor-S.C. Auto 50mm 1.4mm
Nikkor-N Auto 24mm f2.8
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1.4D
Nikkor 135mm f2.8
Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8G ED
Speedlight SB-800
Manfrotto gear for tripod

TS already has a decent (if not good) collection of lenses, all compatible with FX DSLR.
That's why I mentioned that the extra $ saved getting D700 instead of D3 is 'unnecessary' :)

Hi TS. If i were u, i would get the D700 plus batt grip due to my inclination to get the 70-200 f2.8. But that is just me. I would like to and eventually own a D3 myself (dream FX body).

But bro, since there is nothing stopping u from geting the D3, y not get it? Up for you man. U'll get all the perks that D700 cant give. Plus some say, D700 is lighter but i think after u add the batt grip, then i think it is approx the same weight.

Its like u have cash to buy either a Lamborghini or a Skyline GTR. The GTR is already a good steed but yet the Lambo is better. I think u'll know which to get. Skill-wise in taking pictures, u'll learn, everybody learns. Same concept for the above example. U'll learn to maximise the potential of the Lambo.

Go get the D3. Haha. I'll be ur friend.
OTOT. Seeing u do studios i'd like to tag along on some sessions to learn. Possible? I respect u la bro for having the passion to go all the way to the extent of considering the New York Institue of Photography. :) My take is, go ahead. What more can u miss?

Kai.
