What is it that you can't achieve with D300?

Nice, thanks for sharing!
Would you prefer FX or are you saying with DX because of the multiplier?

D300s - Still DX, leave it out
Get D700 over D3 if i will u.. set aside rest of $ and spurge on better FF lens

you can't achieve this with a D300 :

s'

ISO : 4000 - 5000 (somewhere around there)

Even today i was shooting with the D3 on the street, my shutter speed wasn't fast enough to capture a lizard in a dim drain. So i upped my ISO to 3200 without worrying. I can go to 6400 and take solid pictures without cropping.

Same goes with the D700

You would have to ask yourself what is D300 stopping you from achieving certain results?

Otherwise, I would advice you to continue to use D300 take time to master it, can be CLS or other stuff and wait for the price of FX camera to drop.

At this point, the pricing are still target to milk the early adopters. When FX becomes a norm or a commodity, Nikon would have to lower the price for the masses to compete. Now Nikon still have the upper hand, when more competitor starts achieveing ISO25,600...FX camera will be valued like the DX now.

Ask yourself.

For me, DX is wonder at this point. Nice crop factor. I get the additional 1.5 times 'zoom'. ISO at 1600 still looking good as I do not print A1 posters...

Hi, yesterday i just bought the D700.

i testing from DX and FX ISO and Sharpness.

you all can see here is got difference.

can see more details from FX sensor.

Question:
How often does TS shoot soccer in the night?
How often does TS shoot lizard by the dim drain?

If both are at least 4 times a day, get the FX. If once a year, you think about it lar huh :)

Compare lizard's and s-league soccer to his own kids.
They play basketball/table tennis in a dim lit gym?
FX. You want faster tracking, Higher ISO in low light then D3/D700 will do that for you.

Want the higher dynamic range that FX gives you at botanic gardens with your kids on a sunny day?
D3/D700

What about the 1.5x 'zoom'. So far the TS only has wide lenses and is not making the most out of his 24-70. While the 50 is being used much more on my FX body then it ever was when i was shooting 1.5/1.6x.

At the end of the day, for a amateur photographer to a professional photographer the FX series of nikon cameras will be better. It's just how it is. No money concerned at all which hasn't been the TS's priority since the start of the thread.

TS, your D300 shutter count less than 3,000 since you bought it in Jun 2008...? (I've checked your post in WTS section :)

How often are you going to use your D3/ D700 when you got one?

TS is even sellin his SB800 on the WTS section...why?
I though you only have one Flash and sellin it away? Money tight, need to fund for FX?

Young man, learn about opportunity cost. You have a lot to learn. You photographic skill that is shown on the website, a D40 can take better picture than your D3.

Since you ask, my gear:

Nikon F2 (1971) - I use red25 filters for B&W film shots
Nikkor-S.C. Auto 50mm 1.4mm
Nikkor-N Auto 24mm f2.8
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1.4D
Nikkor 135mm f2.8
Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8G ED
Speedlight SB-800
Manfrotto gear for tripod

As you can see I have stayed clear of DX lenses in anticipation of an FX body.

The thread is with regards to D3 vs D700 assuming $ was no option...

Have you touch both bodies before ? I am not very sure why you need ppl to help you make decision over a D3 or D700 bodies ? :dunno:

It seem to me that you have set your mind and prefer to own a D3 .. and the advantages of using a D3 is much better then using a D700. ;)

haha yeah if you say so.
show me the evidence and i will have to agree with you.
just don't talk to me about photography skill.
I have posted numerous threads asking for C&C and having gotten any. None.
I would love you to PM me some critique please with some links and how i could've done better.

most of us tell you to buy D700 instead of D3.

you die die insist that D3 is better. since you got so much $$$, go ahead and get whatever you want.

there is no need to come here to reassure that you have made a good choice, when you dun even wanna listen to what we advice...

at the end of the day, go touch and feel those 2 bodies, since money is not an issue for you. buy what you like to feel in your hands.

TakeThat- You are going off on a tangent.
From the very beginning of the thread, the discussion was about D3 and D700. Money was stated as not an issue to focus primarily on the functionality as there is a lot of grey area surrounding preference that gets masked when $ is a primary consideration.

Everyone has enriched the discussion providing insight in many ways.

You have however, tried to take a phylosophical approach and then a personal twist to your responses. If you are happy with your D300, then I too am happy for you! You may wish to setup a thread about how happy you are with your camera.

Nikon, in all its wisdom has however created the D3, D3X and D700 and it is to owners of those cameras that I request input...

My financial condition and skill was never up for discussion and is frankly none of your business. I intend to sell my D300 and SB800 because I have no use for it once I upgrade. Would you like me to keep it at home to please you? Unlikely as I have nothing to prove.

Many thanks to all for your input... much appreciated.

Ask yourself what you want to shoot my friend.

Your response is quite defensive.
The advice I received through this thread has helped me a lot... some more that others I must say.
The fact that money is not an issue was stated to focus on functionality. Perhaps you missed that?

My thread is about D700 or D3, your response is about "do I have enough money"... ?!

Why are you taking pleasure in stalking TS's posts? You don't have to knock others if they can afford a FX.
