Upgrade to D3?

Consider the weight hor...

D700 already just over 1 kg. Any of the new trinity lenses are about 1+ kg. Imagine on holiday, walking around with 2 lenses and 1 body is already 3+kg, 4kg. U sure u wanna go D3?

Already I am lugging around a tripod, F2 body, D300 and 2 lenses.
I am trying to quantify the difference between D700 and D3 and if it worth the difference.

So far, thanks to all your posts, I have registered:
D700 -> Lighter
D3 -> Faster

I use an external flash.

Best Regards

bro, it appears from your description that you are mostly into portraiture work. as such, i would reckon that you probably wouldn't require the speed of a D3. should you get one, you will essentially be paying a premium for features that would make little, if any, difference in the kinda shots you take.

Jonnodotsg, Agreed.

Many thanks everyone for all your posts!

I have come to realise that I want the D3 (because the RAW files on the D3X are just too large), but what I probably need is the D700. The $ saved could be used on the lenses.

Strangely I dont find any posts on the D3 on this forum...

BTW Any of you thinking about the New York Institute of Photography distance learning course?

Best Regards

you have a lot of money to spare :)

I still use my Dad's F2, his manual 50mm and 24mm.
Pictutes I take of my kids will be priceless :D (... that's the sell-in to wifey).

i feel the D3 is only necessary if you need the pro body build

if not, the D700 has nearer everything else in it...

All,

ok... now i'm outright curious.

The difference has been described as "nearly the same", "kick", "beast", "pro build"...

The question I have is ... what would I miss out if I purchased the D700 vs the D3?

For simplicity, lets leave out the price difference.

geeteethree pointed out:
D3: No dust removal(-), No built in flash (-), Heavier (-), Built in Battery Grip (+), Higher frame Rate (9 -11(dx format) to 8 (w/battery grip) (+), Slightly faster AF (+), Dual CF card (+)

Anything else?

Thanks!

That should be about all of it.. (Maybe you can add this into the list.. the lost of being able to clobber another person with the D3) :bsmilie:

My reasons for buying the D3 when i bought it: Build, Built in grip, High ISO performance, Fast AF, High frame rate, Dual CF card slot, No built in flash. And lastly... D700 wasn't available at the time. HTHs

Got this from Photo.net.

Painful to watch the demo...

You've all probably seen this already... I don't know where this kid gets all of this equipment, but he always has the finest of everything and doesn't mind destroying it to prove a point.

Regardless of what has been said about Joseph Nicholas Spina, the FACT is, he sure has access to some excellent, high end quipment, in fact, pretty much the newest and best of everything Nikon, much of which he does not mind throwing off the top of stairs, pouring anything and everything fluid on, using as a hammer.

If you want to blend, drop, pour water over your camera, get the D3 and not the D700.

;)

I was told he fell on his head at the age of 3..... been like that ever since.

how u knew about the past beats me; but for the record, it's 3mths, not 3 years

Why does TS's portfolio matter in making a purchase?

If the picture that the TS produces does not require the function and the exceptional quality of the D3, D3X and D700. I would advice him to rather invest the money and time in good photography books and courses. Rather than pondering what to buy...

When one reaches a stage of understanding of seeing photography as an Art...one would devote most of his time in perfecting his picture by learning to see light and framing. This is what money and the gears cannot buy or achieve. Gears are secondary, unless TS is doing commercial.

Based on what i have read on this thread, I sense that TS just got started in photography...Correct me if I am wrong.

What is the use of buying a powerful sports car when the buyer can't tame the machine...? Photography is about the image one produced that defines him and not what gear he own. ;)

Mate, the question was about asking some fellow enthusiasts to share their views about the D3 vs D700 to aide my purchasing decision.
I really wasn't looking for your advice on books, or your perspective on Art... which was why I didn't reply to your initial response... but thanks for the offer.

I am helping you to save your money and invest that cash to something that is of more value. If you spend so much and later decide to back off, your cash would be tied to these plastics and metals.

Btw, have you gotten a flash light and other accessories? Do you have a wide angle lens?

D300 is a fantastic camera already.

His using a D300 now.
I think you have your mind set on the D3, if you think it is worthy of the price difference then go for it. And enjoy it because i have loved every second with it.

Same goes with the D700, another great and very capable camera.

There aren't to many D3 threads in the forum because no one has anything to complain about.

Other than the sensor....to me D3 and D700 is completely different animal altogether mechanically and targeted market

One will buy a D3 if it's time to own one....no need to ask as that is the best Nikon has(once)....same thing if one need a D3x....they will aim D3x straight away no need to ask......if you ask, then you probably do not need one....so D700 is the answer

Check this out.

What is it that you can't achieve with D300?

I second your feedback, Bro.

Since you ask, my gear:

Nikon F2 (1971) - I use red25 filters for B&W film shots
Nikkor-S.C. Auto 50mm 1.4mm
Nikkor-N Auto 24mm f2.8
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1.4D
Nikkor 135mm f2.8
Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8G ED
Speedlight SB-800
Manfrotto gear for tripod

As you can see I have stayed clear of DX lenses in anticipation of an FX body.

The thread is with regards to D3 vs D700 assuming $ was no option...
