On dx, imho, 50mm f/1.x is too 'tight' for group shot in tight space, and it too 'short' for 'tele'.

Obviously you haven't done your homework and probably you yourself also don't really know what you are talking about.

Firstly, to be frank, I haven't heard of people commenting that the 50 f1.4 is not sharp. This is definitely not true. Secondly, it seems to me that you need a zoom lens but you have been considering primes which sounded very contradicting. Last but not least, all lenses can shoot portraits and landscapes. It is a matter of whether you know how to do the job or not.

My advice is that you keep your precious 1k inside your pocket first. Shoot more, read more and get your priorities right first but you start looking for a new lens.

I second that, keep d hard earn dollars n practice more with ur existing zoom lens

Hmm, its true that the 50mm f1.4 is not sharp wide open, which pushed many people into buying the Sigma version

If the comparison here is between Nikon and Sigma 50mm f1.4 copies, then I agree that the Nikon copy may not be as sharp wide open. But the comparison in this thread is not an apple-to-apple comparison. 50mm not sharp and that is why 35mm and 85mm are considered??? For me, I don't really think it works this way. Nonetheless, it is really for the good of TS that he should shoot more first and not buy on impulse. A lot of us had been through this route and wasted $$$ so we know.

Been using my kit lens 18-135mm till now (4years). I'm using D80. If you can master your kit lens, everything else is a breeze. You have a good kit lens, it's sharp.

Not more important but it helps to make your photo better (in some cases) and aid you in some situations. It is something good to have.

Flash and lens are totally 2 different thing.. so cant compare.

Yes a speedlight will aid u in dark indoor shooting, with ur kit lens.

I say, learn more about ur kit gears before getting any another lenses

It all really depends on what you shoot.

If you are shooting landscape (purely), you'll probably only need speedlights 1% of the time when yu want to lit up some stones and structures in the dark. But if you are shooting outdoor portrait in landscape (especially at golden hours), flash (might even be studio flash) is needed all the time.

You should really evaluate what you need to decide if it's impt for you.

85 can shoot land landscape no problem.. Just most back more.. Lolz.. The perspective also looks kinda cool to me.. No prob to me at all..

50mm f1.4 is the cheaper f1.4 from Nikon which I have one sitting in my cabinet with very little use.. I do agreed the color is not as good as sigma f1.4 if all setting is the same.. But I prefer Nikon brand..

If u happens to just bring 1 particular lens.. U can shoot what ever you want with it.. Who is to say can or cannot?

85/1.4 and 35/1.4 are both above 2k. And they can't zoom as well.

Shoot more with your 18-105 and learn the basics before you think of another purchase. A better lens do not make you a better photographer. And your 18-105 can shoot portraits very well too.

If you really need a lens for portrait, just get the 50/1.8D. Cost you 100+ only.

Alto I own a d7000.. Never get to own a 18-105.. What basic can be Learn from this lens.. Care to elaborate? Keeps seeing all these terms "a better lens do not make you a better photographer"..

Can you define this blurry term 'more'? If not, stop this useless discussion and learn and shoot. Without knowing which technical aspect of the lens is limiting you you cannot even define what lens you would need if you needed one .. Analyze your pictures, get some books about portrait photography (skip those books or chapters demanding for certain high end lenses) and start practicing. We have gallery section and Critics Corner for feedback.
For a start: set your kit lens to 85mm and don't touch the zoom ring anymore. The perspective is the same as any 85mm prime. Shoot.

Thinking about it further, I realized that with a budget of slightly above S$1,000, you can actually get the:

1. Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
2. Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G
3. Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8D

Ha! Then you'll know if they're useful or not!

Your kit lens is capable for many things..

But if you die die wanna buy new lens, I would say Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 Non-VC would be a good choice and I think you will still have enough money to buy a 50mm f1.8 base on your 1K budget.

Or fork out another 50 to 100 bucks to get a 35mm f1.8 instead of 50mm f1.8.

I beg to differ, a budget of 1k can probably get u the followings + reasonable filters(if u use filters). Unless u are refering to used copies? :wink: and refering to AF 50mm f/1.8D (probably 180+)
I do agree if u shoot with primes, these are the 2 u need.....

2. Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G (about 350+)
3. Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8D (about 620+)

My bad u r right! I mixed up with the afs 50mm f/1.4g price.

Imho, 50mm is +/- 15mm between 35mm and 85mm. 50mm felt a bit 'tight' on dx.
