Upgrade from kit lens

That's what I thought when I started almost 3 years ago... Well... Life is unpredictable.

Hahaha I think given my budget, I doubt I will be really upgrading to FF. maybe 7 years later?

Well, if you are using the len for "I primarily want to use it for walk-around lenses (travel/urban/landscape)", why do you need the f2.8?

I have been using the 24 - 105 f4 L for the last 3 - 4 years. When I travel, I usually shoot at f8.

then it's high time that you jump out of your boundaries and shoot with f2.8.

hmmm.....if I post nonsense, I think i will also be a senior member now.

Chill guys, I think different people use different lens for different purposes. Since dradttg is travelling, he uses f8 because (I assume) he uses it for landscape etc, so aperture need not be so wide. However, f2.8 also has its benefits too, so I don't think there's much point in justifying which lens is better but how each lens is better for each purpose. Just my 0.02.

Peace out. :D

Also, I just checked out your flickr and its seems like you have some great pics as well!
Seem to like these two particularly. Maybe f8 is the way to go!

The thing is, any lens can go F8, but not any lens can go F2.8. End of the day, being able to shoot at F2.8 can be quite convenient, even if it's only to get that 1 shot out of 20. But of course, size, weight and price of lens then come into play.

I'm sure everyone wants a lightweight, cheap and weathersealed 24-150 F2.8 IS to play with if it was available.

There are no rules to whether to use what aperture. So long you get the result that you are happy, that matters the most.

sigma came up with a new 17-70 f2.8-4, reviews are quite good. maybe u shld take a look at that?

The 2nd picture could have looked better if he open up his aperture blades and move closer to the chain-link fence..

if you're shooting for your own pleasure, don't forget that.
shoot until you are "song". shoot whatever subject you like. shoot whatever aperture, shutter speed, color balance, etc.

shoot until you are happy.

block your ears in the meantime.

+1 for Skystrike

I was using a Canon 550d coupled with 18-55mm lens.
Just tried some church photography with flash and a new 2nd hand lens 15-85mm lens and the results are pretty good :)

Was thinking of getting the 17-55canon but its really steep. For travelling and all round purpose lens, I think 15-85mm is pretty good. Now thinking of upgrading body to 7d instead heh for the AF. I also pair 15-85mm with a 100mm macro also non-L version. Think it pairs real well in case I need wider apertures. :)

Just get the 17-40mm f4L. U cant go wrong with it. Borrowed my friend's one. Its amazing, cheap, and relatively light. (And on a side note, insurance when u up to FF)

It's marketed as a UWA lens, but if you mount it on a crop, it 'becomes' a standard lens..
