Nikonnew said:I think it is important to go with your needs....if you can......but most of the time, it's about wants and desire, a camera, for most people, is after all a toy (hand over heart). and this probably is the backbone behind all product release. with Canon and Nikon's expertise, I am sure it is possible for them to release the greatest camera of all time tomorrow morning. , but they will do it one step at a time, because with their expertise, they truly understand the consumers' behaviour.
"Man behind the cam"?....no offense to all the experts here, but I think this claim is one of the most loosely used statement in this forum, if this is really the case, everybody should be stucked with the 300D or 50D with the kit lens and a couple of additionals, because these are decent cameras to start off with..... try giving Alonso the Midlands car, he will suffer. A good cam and lens will definitely help....
"Outgrow your equipment"? I have to agree with this possibility, that's why i thought people should buy "one level" above themselves eventually. so if you are a beginner, you should buy an intermediate cam....but of course, with the right financial backing and the assurance inside his head that he truly wants to learn photography. but again, the price of digital SLR currently is still making it difficult for people to do this, myself inclusive, so do it within your own means.
There are plenty of people whom wanted to buy one model and end up buying the next lower one, because they thought it is too high end for them, but in the forum you can see people buying one and then selling it off again in 2 months in the name of upgrading. so my advise is....provided you are sure of interest in this hobby, buy the highest end that you will afford, and forget about upgrading for the next 3 years.
As men, we gets very technical when buying electronics.....continue doing it, but do consider your heart's desire at the same time, this will make it easier to decide.
I've to agree with you on some points and disagree with you on others.
I own 300D for almost 3 years now and when Canon launched 350D a year or two ago, though I hv the itch to sell 300D and buy 350D which also posted for advise.
I am still sticking on my 300D! Yes, in near future, I will own a 30D that is for sure, but is at least end of this year or next year!
However, I must say that I disagree with you that you have to buy one model higher so that you may not "outgrown" your DSLR unless your pocket are real deep to do that.
I hv just bought my 17-40 f/4L which serve me well, I don't think it is worth it to buy f/2.8L lens now which cost 2-3X more than f/4L now as in 1-2 years time, I might "outgrown" my lens??!! Hope you don't mind me being direct.
