Underwater Cameras Enquiry

Hi there,

I'm conducting a small experiment that requires me to take photos under water. However, there are some constraints for this experiment and I'm looking for a point and shoot camera that allows me to do so.

- Camera should be able to support remote triggering of shutter
(Will be placing the camera in a (LxBxH)60x30x45cm tank, thus WiFi triggering is still possible)
- Camera should be able to support manual settings of aperture, shutter speed and ISO (would like to fix

Currently, I've searched for some cameras which are able to support some of the constraints, but have not found 1 that supports both the constraints.

The Panasonic Lumix FT5 allows for remote triggering via WiFi and manual settings configuration in-camera. However, once I linked the camera via WiFi to the Android app, the settings became auto.

The Nikon AW110 allows for remote triggering too, however, it doesn't supports manual configurations.

The GoPro allows for remote triggering too, but settings are adjusted automatically.

I would like to know if there is a point and shoot camera that is able to fulfil both my criteria for my experiment.

Thanks for the help and pardon for the lack of knowledge in this area. :)

Sad to said... I know of no such camera that could be used underwater.... and as far as I know (and I might be WRONG)... WiFi, Bluetooth or Infra doesn't work so well once underwater...

Yeah, the different signals definitely attenuates in water, however, because I am conducting the experiment in a relatively small environment, the signal will be alright. I have tried it with a GoPro and the WiFi signal is ok.

Ah, that's sad to hear, do you have any other alternatives besides using a DSLR + underwater housing, as this will be a rather expensive set-up and we do not really have the budget for it.

Thanks for the tip!

Sorry....DSLR setup are 95% unable to use any form of remote control without some very heavy modification at very high price by some very skill specialist.... end of the day, $$$$$$$

As for PnS... some camera may be able to fit your requirements while on land... Underwater will be a whole another issue all together

Btw, what is the project you are doing with such requirements... if you don't mind saying of course...

Hm, in short, we are trying to simulate fog in water, thus we are trying to take a picture of an object first in clear water and then slowly introduce stuffs to make the water more cloudy, and taking a picture there after.

Thus, to compare both pictures, we have to ensure that both the pictures are taken in a controlled environment and settings on the camera have to be the same. Furthermore, we are dealing with JPEG, thus its impossible to try and find a correlation between the settings used as they are non-linear. >.<

What's the budget?

Since it's a fairly small tank, you might be able to get away with using a cheaper waterproof case like a DiCAPac. Look at lower-end DSLRs or mirrorless cameras with full-featured wifi remote control, E.g., Panasonic GF6? (My personal experience is with the Panasonic Lumix app. With the GH3, there's full manual control over wifi.)

If you have a way to line up/plan your experiments in an efficient way, then you could even consider renting. A GX7 + kit lens will be approx $50-$60/day.

If it is a small tank. Y not use a big plastic bag taller then the depth of the tank n use a cable release since there is no live creatures in the tank that can b spooked

Bingo

Can Use Timer In Camera Also Right?
