Ultimate Leica

I have been looking for a 50mm the VC 50 1.1 is just too boring.. The 50f2.5 is very nice but too slow. so i have been craving for the zeiss 50 1.5 =)

Nokton 50 f1.1 is boring meh? I don't understand why

Enzokoh, really depends on what you want to get out of this hobby. Many of us were like you when we first started on RF photography or new to photography in general. We went in pursuit of the best bodies/lenses/flashes etc... In the end, most of us will likely go through a period of buying/trying/selling like what Sim stated and settle with a set of doable focal length and bodies.

Not all lenses/bodies are the Ultimate Leica. I guess the only ultimate Leica you can have is to go the Ala-carte way of customising a new body for you. I don't think Leica does Ala-Carte for lenses though as it requires R&D.

If you like to shoot pics of your baby (which I like too), then you may want to focus on 50mm, 75mm or 90mm portrait lenses.

From there, you can narrow down your range of lenses for comparison. Importantly, is you need to do some research on your own. You can find lots of information on the internet and multiple forums across the globe. Read up what people think about the lenses, see the photos taken, and go out there and see if you can find the lenses here physically in Singapore to try out.

Btw, using your finger or any cloth to try and remove the "dust" in the lens is not cool. You should ask the sales person to do so instead.

Happy shopping!!!

The Ultimate Leica or any camera is the one you use to shoot photographs that represent your vision. Eventually, all the great gears in the world will not make you a better photographer. Going out to shoot and learn from your shooting experience is the way to go!!!

I think I remember Mr Enzokoh say before he mainly shoot his baby.

So that would mean he is into portraiture

I also like to shoot baby... from sweet honey babies to my baby Leica (CLE) :bsmilie:

Joke lar  51 posts... no more new member... hahaha! sorry to OT!

Enzokoh... It all about the picture .. How sharp.. Or how bokehish .. Or how the light falls .. The composition , the moments ..

The truth is all this comes with knowledge of photography and from there you can then determine the ultimate lens for yourself.

Look at all the answers .. Not one is the same .. There might be agreements but ...at the end of the day what I like in my rendered photo is not others or you like... But if the fundamental of photography can be observe .. Then almost all good well build lenses can be the utlimate lens .. Just my 2 cents

Cheers

Oh I was not kidding about the 50 0.95 ;)

Basically, leica lens is like wine-tasting.

wine tasting uses a constantly-evolving formal terminology which is used to describe the range of perceived flavors, aromas and general characteristics of a wine.

likewise, for leica lenses, there is alot of description to appreciate the look, glow, bokeh, coma etc etc.

lenses are like wine.

yes the Zeiss 50 1.5 Sonnar is a very fun lens. wide open it got classic soft look, but stopped down it will be razor sharp. just need to be able to control the focus shift issue. i see many nice photo on flickr with this sonnar.

Hmmm

I dont really find the Nokton 50mm F1.1 boring. I used it for a short while on loan from RF.SG chairman, its got nice rendering & tones. Modern sharpness but not asph sharpness.

Very good for shooting portrait:

There is not ultimate leica but there would be the ultimate lens, which in my opinion, the one that you can use on a everyday basis very regularly & delivery consistant performance with the lens.

It used to be the nokton 35mm F1.4 for me but then kena stolen #$%@*^, now my canon 35mm F2 LTM is taking over as my ultimate shooting lens.

I still want 21 lux............... heehee

50 1.1 is best at 2-4 m where you can get subject isolation A protrait lens. But at further distances like 6ms subject isolation gets weak. I guess it doesn't fit my subject matter. Well I'll try to use it more to get a better feel for this lens and the focal length in general

Depends on what you are shooting I guess. I did subjects more than 6meters, still looks fine.

You dont need bokeh for every single shot ma

Ultimate lens is the one on your camera and being used;)

I started with a second hand current generation 35mm f/2 Summicron and it was permanently attached to my M9 for months and I learnt to work around the lens rather than switch and swap lenses.

I also have the 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux that many will claim is the ultimate but it is big and bulky and definitely not discreet. Amazing lens for what it does but not really for street shooting since it draws too much attention. I have been stopped a few times by strangers asking about the lens and that never happens with other lenses.

In my opinion to declare an ultimate lens defeats the purpose of an interchangeable lens camera.

Lastly, with Leica lenses it does not mean the newer and more expensive lens is the better one, they are just different.

Hi guys,Thanks for all the responses.I will heed everyone advices and do some research online too.I will make a purchase on a lens and i want this lens to be a keeper and also a beater. It will be able to use everyday and not buying it and selling it off again when i feel its not right for me.But i have to agree with alot of fellow cs member here.Leica is really too poisonous and i think its impossible to own just ONE Leica. Thanks again.

What lens do you currently own?

Gary I conclude Its not the lens problem per se but the DOF! I saw nocti shots of similar situation. To my eye just as bad... so its DOF issue =)

Now must compare F2.5 iso2500 or f1.1 1250 is prefered =)

lol! Slowly play around & get the sweet spot lor

But noctilux bokeh damn swee :D

super creamy!

Hmm I find the nocti look that it is really not my cup of tea espcially for my style of scale focusing work. Yea I scale focus at aperture 1.2 with the 35 =)
Enzo:
I think its wise what you take you time to pick lens. But fact of the matter is you will end up with a slew of lenses where you will end up using only one lens 80% of the time to the point where you can see what is in your pictue without looking at the frame lines.

If I don't photograph at night and in the dark so much, I think I will be very happy with the full summarit line for its size.
By the way the 35mm is a nice lens for photographying kids =) generally you can get close and dont just picture your kid get his friends, family too for that I find the 35 sweet.
Work case, you can crop to 50mm. given a good printer you can still print up to A2.

My fav kid photo at the moment :

wah seh, how u scale focus with F1.2. that really takes cheem gongfu.

for kids photo, I think 50mm is better if the shoot is to have only 1 kid (ie portrait). If the shot is to include the kid and the mother, or more people, then 35mm is better.

noctilux is really speciality lens for that special look. I don't regard it as everyday carry around lens. too tua kee liao. But frankly hor, I did quite alot of pixel peeping on the internet reviews, and I cannot tell the difference between Nokton 1.1 and Noctilux 0.95. Maybe that just me. okay lah, pixel peep can reveal a tiny bit of difference, but certainly not $9000 worth of difference. What I very interested is to compare the Canon 0.95 dream lens, what that is sibeh tua kee. Biggest lens I ever seen lei. I wonder what is the difference between the Canon 0.95 tua kee lens and the Noctilux 0.95. I read that Canon 0.95 very rare and very ex also iszzit.

heehee, indeed cheem gongfu to scale focus at F1.2, I have problems doing it at F2

I used both the Nokton 50mm F1.1 & Canon 50mm F0.95 before, not mine, on loan, too poor to afford one!

True these big boys are not your everyday carry walk about lenses, especially the canon 50mm F0.95. 72mm diameter if I'm not wrong, turning the barrel just makes me tired already :bsmilie:

got a small set here on the Canon 50mm F0.95

Bokeh on this lens is MAD

Minimal focal distance, cant see anything at the background, just one blur mess!

Think its going for about USD3000++++ for a modified ready unit??
