tastefully done!

I notice some rust like a couple of mths aft buying sirui. Not sure if that's common, my vanguard did not have that. Otherwise the sirui legs are smooth and all that's fine. Just that the centre column cannot be manipulated to stick outwards which I find useful .

heard some quality issues with sirui? smooth legs are not a gd thing. hope you will not experience why this is so :)

Lol why. I'm gonna need a new tripod. One of the screw is so screwed due to rust that i cant fit the allenkey even after scrapping off the rust. This old one use for sea situation. :p

i just got the new GT1544T. good enough for me.

My Sirui 2205 failed on my recent trip. The plastic O ring inside one of the legs disintegrated over a period of time and can no longer hold a section of the leg in place. Got a 1541 to replace it.

that is why i believe in my gitzo. pay for quality. but then again sometimes i ask myself how many times do i really use a tripod.
i also heard the initial batch of new systematic has got some quality issues.
not too sure about it now though....

I understand that many people do have doubts about the quality of China's products, so do I.

They can price the same product very cheap or more expensive due to the materials they would use. Somehow they can price their products cheaper than the European as their labour is cheaper and they could use and make their own raw resources to product their products.

I was thinking of buying Gitzo T1541/2 but came across this Benro and Sirui. I also read some comments that their Gitzo also has crack on their carbon Fiber tripod. I saw a lot of good comments about Benro so I went to take a look. Indeed, the quality is not bad for Benro. Then I read up about Sirui and I also saw a lot of good comments for Sirui too. Some even comments that it is better value than Benro. I went down to TK photo to try the Sirui. To my surprise, the quality seems to be good.

Personally, I have a Manfrotto 190xProB with 486RC2 but seldom take it out as it is heavy for me. So I have been looking to buy a lighter tripod and finally settle for Sirui to try out. Will it last? I really do not know but I know I would bring it out more often than my Manfrotto. I do come across comments that their Sirui is still working well after 3/4 years. I also will not feel painful if I had lost it or break compare to Gitzo and when i bring it along when oversea, I'm not so worried too. So long as the tripod is light and useable for quite sometime, it already worth it worth. Sirui comes with 6years warranty so it does gives me a peace of mind.

I also have concern for the plastic sleeve in the lock of Sirui. Its the parts that one dont see. But since I dont use tripod too often and not in extreme condition, so no point buying Gitzo.

The problem with most of us is the more expensive a tool is, the lesser we want to subject it to abuse. So just get a cheap usable one and use it well.

I think the lesson to take home is to check your stuff before you leave the door. If I had checked the tripod before the tripod, I would have avoided bringing a door stopper on the trip. Oh well.....

I'm not advocating everyone must get a Gitzo but I truly believe they command a higher price not just because of the name. A lot of effort had been spent on designing a good product. Others can reverse engineer and produce something similar but a lower price point means that they have to cut back on something else e.g. material selection. You get what you paid for.

well said!
I'm sure Gitzo make a lot of money. but i'm willing to pay extra for the brand and definitely for the quality. i don't use use it much tough :)

I use the 2205 too. How long or how extensively did you use it before it failed?

I've had it for slightly more than a year and probably used it no more than 30 times.

I heard of a dealer in HK who sells tons of Gitzo. He has a cross section of Gitzo and other brands to show how real the 6X or 8X carbon is....
Well i totally agree that end of the day if it's cheap, we won't feel as painful if the thing is spoilt. Some people buy ferraris and seldom drive....
If we think about it, if a $100 tripod spoils after 30 times that's just 3 dollars/use.
Imagine if you have expensive equipment and the tripod gives way? do we need to consider this point?

To each his own.

A 700hp EVO will probably cream any Ferrari on the starting grid but does it have what it takes to complete Le Mans? Only time will tell......

Have been using my Benro tripod and Kangrinpoche ballhead for 5 years now. Got the Benro because I wanted something small, lightweight and able to support ~ 8 kg. It's been into rivers, sea water, sand and all kinds of conditions. Seems to survive well. OK, to be honest, I've been secretly hoping it'll give way so that I can find an excuse to get a Gitzo GT1542T. But it's quite a survivor. :bsmilie:

Not sure about SG, but the warranty period here(China) is for 5-6 years.
But the thing I don't like is:
1) the 4 joints, which actually makes the tripod not very stable.
On hind sight, I would have preferred less joints.
2) the screw that mounts the leg to the tripod base comes loose after a while - not a very good design.

I threw the sirui away. Got the Gitzo and be done with it.

For some, a Gitzo can be a bridge too far.

Lol the screw on my sirui is rusting so badly the allenkey cannot go in to tighten it, sotheleg can be swinging. Now thinking of getting a gitzo plus a geared head
