tripod recommendation

Hey, dleugene. Are you the same Eugene i spoke to yesterday at fullerton? Im the guy who spoke to you asking about the 450D liveview issue.

Anyway, i like the Sirui cause of the folding options. It can be folded until pretty compact. Any other tripod with this function as well?

Is a secondhand manfrotto 190xprob and 486ballhead @ 250 worth it?

Yup, that me. The other brand u can check out is benro.

From the pass 1 day of BNS, there were some 1 selling 055XPROB for $180.
And sometime ago, 488RC2 is selling for $120.

It is better to know the actual selling price of the item and study the pass bns price.

BTW the new tripodhead are now known as 496 & 498.

Just went to TK this eve... ordered a cabinet, checked on the range of bags and the tripods... Initially, my mind was set on Gitzo 1531, moderately priced at 690. Why that model? It's 3 sectioned (thought should be sturdier than 4 or 5). Then I was redirected to Sirui... First it was T 2204X - very sturdy! Even sturdier than 1531 when tested for vibrations on the legs. 2204 was able to disperse the vibrations much faster - to my surprise of course, and it came with 4 sections! But the main difference was the minimum width of the last leg -2204 had thicker last legs (19mm!) as compared to 1531... Btw, this Sirui model had 8X CF - that I believe made some difference! The price was about 1/3 of 1531! Much lighter, folded smaller!... Then I was introduced to N2204 - very similar to the X version, but had the versatility of detaching of the legs to be coupled with the head to become a monopod! Immediately started dreaming about shooting with a 70-200 on sport photography...*drools*... DANG!... I'm sold on this model - and it costs 420 without the head! I'm planning a Markins or Photo-clam...

One thing for sure, to hear the recommendations and hoohahs is one thing - but to go down and compare them yourself, that's an eye-opener! You'll be really surprised of the final outcomes from your initial findings.

I think N2204 is a good buy given all the specs and being a lot sturdier than my initial target! Gitzo maybe branded and very well known - but I don't believe every single model of their line is the best of everything especially if you have a budget constraint! I'm lucky that I didn't rush to buy that Gitzo I was targetting for or else I'd really be regretting - the extra 270 bucks could be saved up for a really good lens!

Hi kriegsketten,
You are very wise to go to the shop to test tripods and decide on what to buy in terms of specs, quality and price.

If you read my posting further up, I had to pay "school fees" to get a tripod that I feel suits me - the Sirui N2204. The salesperson (Richard at TK) is not much of a help, in that he has no time to go through with everyone the details of tripods. Actually, I cannot blame him because he does not know the requirements of customers. It is the customer who should go there with a list (specs) of what he wants and ask the salesperson which model can match his specs. There are just too many models to choose from and each model is for a specific need.

The N2204 is just the right one for me because it is sturdy; has good height; it is very low at min.; and with a built in monopod; quite light; and the finishing is good. I think the price is just right, but to some people, it may be quite expensive.

Cheers.

Do hope N2204 will work out for you. Yes, the N series has the lowest min height for the entire Sirui range.

I've went to TK about 3-4 times since they first opened at Funan - never have I once looked intently at the Sirui range (probably due to the unfamiliarity of the brand, Gitzo was very new to me as well!). My perception completely changed since yesterday. Thanks so much to the saleperson who was very patient and friendly with me and practically demonstrated in full the "vibration absorbtion/dispersion" of several make/brands so that I fully understand what I really need to look out for in a tripod (instead of blindly insisting on 3-sectioned legs, which didn't really perform as well as I thought due to the wobbly and thinner last sections)...

I know not everyone would enjoy the same equal sales service at any given time, so I thought I should share my experiences here so that the tripod seekers would know extra bits of what to look out for... Remember, don't be mislead by any brand as each will have its fair share of "lemon" models.

Tips:
1) Know your budget (but be a little bit flexible if required - for the best)
2) Think ahead of what you might need in the future (not just current)
3) Look at the features closely - some of Sirui series comes with monopod detachment - do you really need it? - especially useful for panning shoots (sports with an ultra heavy lens) or where there will be no room for tripods...
4) Height requirement (bring your cam and what-not fittings for extra measures) You don't want to tip-toe nor bend too low... But must bend a little, don't just go for eye-level. It is not everytime you'll shoot straight ahead - there will be times you'll need to tilt the cam downwards (e.g. shooting down from the top of the building). With the ballhead clamp of your choice, plus battery pack attached, tilt your cam down to the fullest, tripod legs fully extended, center column fully retracted - if you can still look into the viewfinder comfortably without tip-toing or bending - you've got your tripod height.
5) Min height - useful for some really odd angle shots (like SHLEW mentioned)!
6) Don't blindly follow "3 legs good, 4/5 legs bad" mentallity like I did - the stability would depend on the thickness of the last leg sections.
7) Portability - how it folds up (with the ballhead attached). Especially for travellers -very important.
8) Weight - not necessarily the heaviest is the best - if it can't control vibrations well - it is as good as dead-weight you have to lug around for nothing!

What is cheap and good varies from person to person depending on budget/needs/equipment. To me, I was prepared to fork out for a $690 model. Instead I was shown (and demonstrated) another model (brand unbeknownst to me) - better vibration control - more important useful features - lighter - suitable min/max height - better portability - comes with bag and strap! For $420 - I'm totally convinced that I've found my version of CHEAP-er and "GOOD-er" option! :bsmilie:

Well I just got my tripod quite recently at TK too, a Manfrotto 055CX, just wondering how come most of the people here do not use Manfrotto?

This thread caught my attention, as I am going to buy a tripod this week. But as a newbie, I will most probably be buying the Fancier 6662A first. At the price it is selling, even if regret also no heart pain. How come no one looking at this model?? Is it a lousy model?

Sorry, but I didn't meant it that way, of course there are good photos out there taken without the use of a tripod, I just meant to make a general enquiry about the reputation and quality of manfrotto products as it is not much recommended so I was wondering if I made a right choice of purchase. I am not a fan of their products and definitely is not here to snob others..

Manfrottos make good tripods. I am using a 190xprob myself.

The 055 series is good in that the height is tall and the legs are very strong. The downside? Heavy.

Also Manfrotto are very conservative in listing their maximum weight according to my tests. When they state 5kg, you can really put 5kg and still be stable. Some people say you should buy tripods with weight rating 2x of your heaviest setup. But that really depends on how the manufacturers rate their max load. When you have other brands coming out with max loads like 10-20kgs on a travel tripod, the 055 being so big will of course look bad with the max 8kg. But it is all on paper. When you really load up the tripods you will know the difference.

That, plus quite a number of chinese/taiwanese manufacturers have come up with good products with much lower pricing. This has hurt manfrotto quite a bit. The one thing I think Manfrotto is lacking is in releasing new products that fit the trend of the current market. But you have to consider this, manfrotto and gitzo belongs to the same company. Manfrotto will never release a cheaper travel tripod that will cannibalize Gitzo's market share.

Thus heavier and more expensive, Manfrotto has fallen out of grace recently. But if you look at your tripod, you will see that it is still a very good tripod. Sturdy with the option to do horizontal arm.

Personally, I would only go for the aluminium 190xprob or 055xprob. If I want CF, it means I want lighter. If I want lighter, I would not go for manfrotto anymore, and will go for Sirui (personal choice) as their products are lighter and cheaper. For me, I actually have 2 tripods that I use. Manfrotto 190xprob for everyday local use. When I travel, I bring my Sirui T-1004x.

It is not a tripod that will last. But for the price, it is really cheap...

Personally I would buy it in China. It cost a lot less there. If you have friends or relatives going there, might be worth your while. If not just buy it in singapore.

But I suggest you give Sirui T-1004x a look also. For $180 ball head and tripod package with 6 years warranty, you will be getting a very good setup, as opposed to a $60 fancier (in SG, cost much less in china) that will break very soon.

I don't think breaking and losing a $60 tripod is a big deal, it's when it breaks/fail with your $$$$ Dslr sitting on top and losing that, that's a bummer !

It's like driving a fast sports car with the cheapest tyre you can find.

Did a most expensive tripod take better photo? Cheaper tripod take lousy photo or photo blur n distorted? Hmmmm.....Need some knowlegde here,:dunno::think:

All things being fair, if you are using your tripod indoors, most probably there would be no differences ...but shoot from a very windy, outdoor location and the OOF cause by the less stable, shaking and vibrating tripod would be very telling.

But you are right, a more expensive tripod does not necessary means better pictures.
...I'll be more concern with an unsteady tripod tipping over because a lock on one of the legs failed !

hi,
as a newbie here i was looking for a tripod around $100+ any good recommendation? thx

Hi daredevil123,

Is Sirui R1204 good for backpacking? Just checked that its price is around SGD290. Is it worth the price?

Weight: 1.65kg :o

dats the reason why some shun 055CX :bsmilie:

my Sirui carbon fibre (T1204) with ball head is only 1.1KG and compact when folded. Stability wise, its quite good on flat/uneven grounds (must admit i haven test with strong winds) with 5DMKII + 35mm f1.4 + 580EXII setup. It dun shakes a single bit.
