Tripod queries..

Actually good la. Need to have an independent failsafe system... if not BBB till no tomorrow.
Now I have cooled down from the initial "bloodlust", I am just looking to get a T1004X for travel. Light enough, stable enough, compact enough. And it is aluminium. If some people try to be funny or steal my camera, I can still use it as a weapon to whack their heads.
Locally, no problem with my current 190xprob. heavy, but driving here and there la dey. no fear.
Must do independent review of tripods as usable weapons:

Not really, I don't have a good tripod (the older one, shakey-wakey like hell - the 30 bucks kind)... Have been looking at a good tripod for more than a month now... and eyed the N2204 like that's the only tripod ever manufactured on this planet... :bsmilie:
Did I say my pod is ball-less? So that means I have to wait a while longer before I can actually use it...

How heavy is your Manfrotto anyway? Never did get a chance to weigh it.
Actually if we have too much cash, we wouldn't be talking about aluminium sirui and manfrotto.
If I am loaded, and budget is no issue, I would get a Gitzo 1541T AND a Gitzo Explorer. Both matched with RSS heads.
But alas, I am poor.
190xprob tripod is 1.8kg. My 488rc2 is 0.67kg. Total weight = 2.5kgs

Wow, 190 is indeed heavy! That's a pretty heavy head as well!
And Daredevil is right, Surui is in between cheap to low medium cheapness as compared to Gitzo - which ranges from medium to ex!

Ya. But it is an awesome tripod, with the horizontal capability of the center column. And it is very stable. I've looked around, most tripods with variable angle center column are kind of heavy.

I didn't mean it as a bad note, more like a "good" heavy! :bsmilie: Heavier tripods tend to be sturdier, as long as the last legs aren't wobbly.

And you're telling us we have loads of $$ to spend?? :bsmilie: Be forewarned that Gitzos don't come cheap, low end prices are like top ends of Sirui models...
Don't let me try to convince you, go down to TK and ask for a demonstration test. See and feel for yourself, listening to us is like buying blindly from ebay.

I think the choice of tripod is a bit secondary compared to the Ballhead issue. Do look at Markins (head to TK photo) and Photo Clam (at SLR). Both one stop at Funan.
Markins is the older kit in the block and has a very good market reputation.
Whereas PC is pretty new (2007) and has built up a solid reputation over the years (go read the net), but PC has a greater range of ball sizes to choose from over Markins' 3. Price wise, PC is lower.
One more thing, Markins will need oiling on the balls (says the internet), whereas PCs don't (they use a different tech). Seniors do help to correct me on this.
Both are Korean brands (competitors) and are top notch in overall quality.
Tripods would be the least of your worries, without a good ball head - there goes your fantastic landscapes and long exposure shots...
