i got through Singapore airport with my tripod (in tripod bag) as handcarry. However, on my way back from Australia, the australian airport staff forbid me from carrying up the plane as they claim it is juz as dangerous as those forbidden items like golf club and baseball bats which are potential weapons.
I had to check in the tripod with tripod bag on its own (with 3 rolls of FRAGILE labels over it) as my luggage bag is rather small. Anyway, the tripod came back same in one piece.
So i reckon it's not just the airline guidelines. The airport staff do play a part in it too as i took SIA for both my outgoing and incoming flight.
