if you think carefully, a gitzo tripod is a really long term investment.... so if your pocket can take it, buy once and no need to upgrade...
the T series are the traveller series, so can fold to shorter length...
but the legs tend to be pretty thin....
markins ballhead is smooth, and no creeping.... that's the best part....
try it and you will never want any other ballhead.... its that good....
only problem is that it doesn't come cheap....

Saw the specs for Gitzo 1541 on the web. It claimed that the 1541 and take a maximum 200mm lens. Any idea if that means its up to a 200mm f2.8 lens? Asking this cos I've got a 70-300mm lens. I know in terms of lens weight it should not be a problem as the 70-300 weights less then the 70-200mm f2.8. Would there be stability issues if the lens is longer than 200mm?
Also asking again if anyone has any experience buying tripods in HK? Seems there are savings buying there.

Markins Ballhead is indeed smooth. My combo is Gitzo GT0531 and Markins Q3-Tr - heavenly combo with my D700 & 24-70mm. Highly recommended :thumbsup:
Yah! This Bro is right! Just remember to buy tripod with center column hook to allows you to hang a stabilizing weight below like your Bag or something with weight for Extra Stable so that your S$5000 DSLR will not end up falling down and break into portion when you take fireworks this coming NDP!

gitzo legs and acraswiss ballhead is my choice of combo.

Too bad Singapore there is no distributer for this brand "Giottos"
Its a pretty decent make, I got 2 tripod from Giottos, model MT9242 and MT9350. the 9242 was my 1st tripod that I bought for my DSLR D80, its pretty good with a 3Kg load and the height is pretty decent of abt 1.24 - 1.48m. and the 9350 is a 5Kg load 1.29 - 1.51m and it can be use without a ball head if want as it got a 3way center column.
a bit hard to find this brand locally, alot is left over stock or the shop bring in themselves and limited stock. lucky to find the 9350 at a shop beside Lords and got it for quite a steal of $158.
ball head I am using a cheapo replica of Benro KS-0 with a load of 8Kg which I gotten online, free shipping, cost me abt $65SGD. the ball head can easily hold stable my camera in portriat position (min 2kg setup, D700 + 24-70) so thou its a cheapo replica I find it very worth it. not top notch build but its still pretty good and most import is that the control and holding ability is good enough to hold my D700 + various lens and flash.

If I may chime in, I've used both these support setups with a D700 + 24-70mm f/2.8 combo and can honestly recommend them.
1) Gitzo 2531 + RRS BH-40
2) Gitzo 3531S + RRS BH-55
1) Gitzo 2531 + RRS BH-40
2) Gitzo 3531S + RRS BH-55
For my setup, i have the manfrotto 055 4 section carbon with markins m10. slightly heavier than most of your recommendation but just nice for my needs. stable, tall enough with centre column not extended. I usually tie it to my flipside400 or when hiking I will put it on a strap and carry it. lighter than a SAR21/M61 so still manageable. But havent travel with it before so maybe not so travel friendly.

newkon, though i am unable to speak from personal experience, i do know that Gitzo ballheads are nowhere near as well-regarded as their legs. i'd strongly suggest you get another head instead.
also, i'd just like to add one tiny bit to the discussion here. while Gitzos are reputed for their great tripod legs, potential buyers should also understand that, at the end of the day, the support setup one chooses should match one's system of camera bodies and lenses in terms of rated-load-bearing-to-weight ratio. Just because a set of tripod legs was made by Gitzo does not automatically make it suitable if the weight placed on it exceeds its optimum operating/load-bearing range.
To find a suitable support system for your gear, find out what the heaviest possible weight of your system is, and then find a ballhead and tripod that are each rated to support this number.
