I would very much like to try out filters.

I am looking for something which is robust and lasting.

I went to TK Foto yesterday. They promoted the Lee foundation kit to me. It cost about $400 plus. As I am starting out, I am not sure if I want to spend on such high end products at the moment.

Unfortunately 100mm filters with the holders/adapters are not cheap (more if you want 'robust and lasting')

Even if you go for bare minimum eg the 3rd party holder + adapter, plus the cheaper Hitech 100mm soft GND (more prone to colour cast compared to LEE), it will set you back around $200. Then you still need to consider if you need ND filters, CPL filters, reverse GND filters, different strengths etc...
