Travelling considerations

i will just bring the 16-85. usually it could fit 85% of the situations.

if go with someone you love or will love, bring the 50/1.4 to entertain the love...

will not bring 70-300VR and 85/1.4. too heavy unless self driving.

haha, before i when to hk, just bring 18-55 + 50mm 1.8 and tripod also.
this is matching and light weight. i think is good enought.
if u have 16-85 vr is great lens.

After considering all the valuable feedback here, I think I've made up my mind ;). I've decided to bring the 16-85VR and 70-300VR only. I can accomodate the weight of the 70-300VR, plus there may be situations where a telezoom will be useful, so it'll go with me. I'm not bringing the 50 1.4D as I'll probably don't shoot low-light much. For not-so-low-light, the VR function of the 16-85 will be sufficient, as long as the subjects are not moving. Likewise for the tripod, I'm not bringing it as I won't be shooting much at night time.

Thanks to all who have contributed opinions. You have helped me in this dilemma :bsmilie:.

Good call.

Hi, just to share my own setup:
for DX: tokina/nikon 12-24... I 've found I shoot at both ends frequently, 35mm f2/50mm f1.8 and 55-200 vr( an amazing sharp and light lens)
for FX: tamron 17-35, 50 1.8, 70-300 VR

These are roughly equivalent focal lengths on both ranges that won't break the bank.
If used on a D90/D700 a tripod is optional, unless stopping down for tack-sharp landscapes, then of course its mandatory! :)

If you're changing lens when travelling, you'll also need to carry CCD cleaning protocol stuff like the fluid, cleaning brush and arctic brush.

It creates a problem when carrying cleaning fluid in an aircraft, some of you might think to get the cleaning stuff when overseas and that's another problem in some countries.

Whatever lens you decide to carry when travelling, do get a good PNS camera as a backup.

I second this call, bring as little as possible. I personalyl go with the 18-200 on travelling trips with a small body (i take out the vertical grip and leave at home on my D100).

Also, if you really must bring more things, bring a flash. Lose one lens and bring the flash - you'll be glad you did.

With the high MP count today, I will lose tele lenses before wides; since you can crop if you REALLY need to (and most pple's travel pictures do not go beyond 4R if they are even printed). I will loes the 501.4 if all you are bring that is for low light. Just boost ISO.

My travel philosophy is travel light. Each extra weight will be a BIG burden when you walk a lot.

agree with vince. for travelling, i take my 18-200mm , 50mm and one kenko tube for close up. in the end found myself using the 18-200 often than not.

for me.. I will bring the 16-85 and the 50 and that's it. The 50 just in case you want to take picture in the restaurant.. 70-300 not required for holiday.

DX can get Swine Flu - go for FX.....:bsmilie:

But lets be real - ONLY 200 people have died world wide out of 6,300,000,000 people - relax!!!

World wide 1,000,000 people die from Malaria EVERY year!!! A Maleriademic maybe??
500+ people starve to death in Africa evey 5 minutes... sorry to be totally side tracked here

BUT

I think this flu thing is overly exaggerated, at least for now. Plus the way the news are making out of it, makes it worse. And I've started seeing people here wearing masks!! Wat the?? I mean, there is such thing as taking precautions, but at this stage, isn't wearing a mask a bit absurd? It may cause unnecessary worries among other people. Very kia si in this case.

Not true... if you have been to Japan, Taiwan.... people wear mask.. because they are sick and do not want to spread the germs about.. so wearing mask is not absurb.. unless you are wearing to prevent getting germs.. and that's plain ignorant...

i'll bring the 16-85.
most of these countries you're going to requires WA.
for the occasional street portraits, you'll just havee to go closer.

i might also bring the 70-300 if i dont mind the weight.

i'll leave the tripod at home and myabe just bring a super small tripod as long as your fingers, or the bean bag.

many places nowadays do not allow you to mount a tripod, especially tourist-flooded areas.

also, someone mentioned if it's a family trip or photographic trip.

for fam trip, i'll even consider bringing a pns.

for photographic trip,i'll bring almost my entire arsenal which is relevant to the shoot.

Ok, maybe I should've been more specific. If they are wearing masks because they are ill and want to stop the germs from spreading, I think that's being considerate. My previous post was referring to those who wear to prevent getting the germs.

I've also heard about this tripod restriction. That's why I've decided to bring the 16-85VR and 70-300VR only. I figure the weight of the latter is still manageable, so I'll bring it.

However, the tripod can be used for non-tourist-flooded areas, e.g. doing night shots of the city area, suburb area, day/night landscapes. Tourist areas have to hand-hold.

I think I would use the 70-300VR if there are outdoor events, or particular interesting objects in general. Tripods are a bit tempting for landscapes and night shots, though.

I have faced these travel questions myself when I go to Singapore (or further) on work or on holiday... I reckon the other important consideration is a decent camera bag that you can comfortably tote your gear in and not be too conspicuous....

I shoot the D90 usually with the 70-300 and I also have the 105VR Macro, Tokina 11-16 and the 50mm 1.4D... My next lens will be the 16-85VR.

When I travel, I tend to bring 3 lenses (70-300, 11-16 & 50), a diffuser for the pop up flash, spare battery, spare 8 and 16gig cards and the charger, with a few disposable lens wipes. Everything fits into my Lowepro Classified 160AW shoulder bag and no one even suspects that there is a DSLR in the bag with all that gear.

I even bring along a netbook if I am on work and that fits into the back pocket of the bag. As for tripods, have a look at the Gorilla Pod (or similar mini tripods) but use the largest sized version. The Gorilla Pod is not the most stable of travel platforms, but it beats handheld anytime whilst being small, light and amazingly versatile. I've used mine everywhere from the middle of the jungle in the middle of a small stream to stuck on one of the Collier Quay bollards along the river.....

You may wish to invest in the small Nikon infra red remote trigger too as its cheap and easy to use on the small tripods instead of using the shutter time delay or wired trigger. The remote is tiny, about the size of a thin car alarm remote and I find it very handy for longer exposures.

I reckon that with the 16-85VR, I will leave the 11-16 home as the 16-85 is much more versatile and lighter too. I love my 50 1.4 especially if I take pics of the kids in the restaurant or one a bus or train where light through a window can be beautiful but low and a flash would not give you the natural light.

Good luck dude.
