Travel Setup for FF

May I know which model is that?

The Gitzo GT-1550T Traveler 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ballhead cost more than thousand dollar. I think good substitute is Benro Travel Angel. Comparable load, light weight, much cheaper, and detachable leg for monopod function.
The tripod is shorter when fold and it's easier to put into luggage when traveling.

How is the depth of field for the 24mm from F1.2 to F2? Like family with some interesting items just behind them? I was thinking of a prime for low light like inside a church and castle.

You sure to use 24mm for group photo? The distortion will kick in with object at corner. If you to shoot group photo at centre and walk back a bit, the background will be rendered nicely with f1.4 and the group is still sharp.
I shoot many group photo with 35L at F1.4~f2.8 to get rid of distractive background when I have rather flat position of people. If you like more DOF, just simply set it to smaller aperture for the purpose.

I use a Gitzo G126 which was purchased a decade ago - newer and better models such as the carbon fibre ones are available today. The G126 suffices for small lenses and without wind, even for long exposure with center column extended. Without the center column extension it is not full height. I do have a bigger Gitzo but ahem, that one is not easy for travelling.

No need so many lens, I suggest bring 24-105 alone. For me, I only bring 35L for my holiday. It's more than enough liao. U don't need so many pens when u know what u r doing, especially when 70-200 is a heavy lens. Enjoy ur holiday.

I would go with my 5D2 and 35L.
Or else, super light weight would be Leica M8.2 with Elma 28mm f2.8

of course there is another school of thought. It depends on what sort of holidays it is going to be. If you have invested in all the wonderful equipment, what better time to use it than in beautiful, exotic locations when you travel. Otherwise, all your lenses would only take pictures of Singapore right?

IMO, forget about the interior of churches and castles. Some churches do not allow photography. Some churches are too wide for 24mm . Some churches have too wide dynamic range with highlights from windows and the rest in shadow. Some churches looked the same after you have been to a few. Same for castles' interior. I find usually taking photos of family outside and enjoy the history and sights inside to be more enjoyable. But then that's my experience and others may not concur with it.

If you must, using flash to illuminate family in interiors yield better results. For this you do not need f1.4. However, some of these places forbid the use of flash.

yeah. the plan is to bring about 4 lens. but will take 2 and leave 2 in the hotel each day depending on the locations of that day.

The trips I have with my kids, normally I do not have much time to take good picture.
However there are trips that just me or with my wife, I will have a lot of time to take picture.

For long trips, I travel with 5d mk ii, 8-15, 16-35, 28-135 and either 70-300 or 100-400. For short trips, 8-15, 16-35 and 28-135.

I also bring along slik carbon fibre tripod + small rrs tripod head with panning plate, small Sunpak flash for fill flash, cir-pl and gnd with lee filter holder.

For storage and backup, 2xlexar 32gb, 2xscandisk 16gb, 2xportable harddisk and asus eeepc 701.

My fav setup is:
1. 17-40L
2. 70-200 f4L or 100mm Macro
3. Sigma 50mm / 35mm f1.4
4. 430EX

Depending on where I'm going and what season it is, I'd bring different setups.

For example, Japan in spring/summer, I'd definitely bring my 100mm macro. Went once in winter with the 100mm macro and it was in the bag 90% of the time.

I usually bring 17-40L + 70-200mm when I'm off to scenic places.

When I'm in the city area, I normally bring 50mm/35mm with me and nothing else. Sometimes if I am up to it, I'd tag the 17-40L along for the city trips.

Inside historical building with low light condition ike castle and church, do you use 17-40 F4 or your 35 f1.4 ( or F2, F2.8) ?

Is the Sigma easy to AF?

LoL :D
This isn't a group photo. Btw, it's nice :)

Thanks...but what I'm trying to say is that the 24 can be used for groups and portraits.
You just need to avoid putting people along the edges and you're fine. ;)

For holidays, I prefer to travel light. My typical setup as follows:
5D2 + 35L
85L
17-40L
430ex2

Unless its specifically a photography trip, then I will bring everything I have. :bsmilie:

Used a 5D w 16-35 in Yosemite. Dry/10-15degrees celcius. Worked fine until battery door broke (secure with tape).

Moving on, I would love to bring rf for travelling but I dont know how to deal with the lack of focal lengths beyond 50 (R4M). 75? 135?

5D3 + 24-105L + light weight tripod + Intervalometer for time lapse. :)

I was thinking of going with prime as well. Can you share with how you manage with lens change on a trip? How do you decide when to use 35 and when to use 85? how often is the lens change within a day?
