Transferring miniDV footage from camcorder to PC

Is it possible to transfer the miniDV footage to my DVD player's HDD > burn it on a DVD-R/RW then transfer to my PC to edit?

The answer is yes, but it's not the best way. If your PC has a firewire connection, you can transfer the video directly to its hard disk without any further compression or degradation. If you capture to your DVD recorder it will compress it to MPEG2 format. Then after you copy to your PC and edit it, you will end up compressing it one more time.

If your PC does not have firewire, you could consider getting a PCI FW card, it would cost around $30+.

of course it woundnt detect

U miss the driver of the capture card

FW card shouldn't need a driver if you are using Win XP. Try hooking it up with the camera switched off, and then turn it on in playback mode. BTW, don't use the FW and USB cables at the same time, anyway USB is only for still pictures, not video.

You can also try connecting to your DVD recorder and see if the cam is recognised. That will at least rule out a FW cable problem.

try another cable or computer/laptop to rule out a FW problem inside your JVC camera.

always turn off your camera first before connecting. my client fried his camera's FW board when he hot plug the FW cable to the camera.

U must get the driver for your camcorder ... go to jvc website and download ur camcorder drive..get ur model right

You don't need any driver for firewire connection. This is from the UK JVC website.

Firewire doesn't require drivers, only the USB side of things do.

WinDV is simple and neat. I like the feature to specify discontinuity threshold to separate the video into a few files. Later can use VirtualDub to join the files if you want to.
