Top 3 lens for DX body

Not much info in Google. But there are some similar user comments from the Dpreview forum: http://dp-master1.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=37370620

It will be amazing if the Ais version can match the quality of the G version at wide open f1.4. From what I used and read, many old MF lenses can't perform as good as the new G primes at wide open f1.4. But when they stop down f2.0 onwards, the performance will be getting closed.

For the 35 have to ask Kid. Because I did not do the test. But for 50mm or similar range, I like the MF lenses more. Also when u say performance, it is subjective also. Because different people put different weight on different characteristics.

Yes, some people don't like to shoot at wide open f1.4. They prefer to shoot f2.0 onwards, hence the new G prime lenses will be less attractive to them, especially when factoring in the price.

Well I meant wide open performance.

Don't really follow the reviews from so-called experts as you never know what is their agenda; whether they get kickbacks from the manufacturer for posting a positive review is something we will never see. Just borrow or rent the lenses for yourself and you should know immediately what suits you.

The new G lenses lose out to the D and AI-S series on focusing speed due to the SWM doing its job, but the upshoot is silent handling and fewer shots that miss focus. All versions get the job done, taking time to learn the behaviour of each lens is all that is needed.

So as not to OT too much, for DX:
Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6
Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
Sigma 50 f/1.4

FOr the Budget... best 3 Lenses for DX are : NIkon 18-105mm VR, Nikon 35mm F1.8 and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8
For the Budget is not a concern are : Nikkor 24mm F1.4, Nikkor 85mm F1.4 and Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 VRII

in regards to both DD and Kent abt the 35 1.4 both version,

if not for my poor MF skills always not spot on and m so slow i would definitely get the ais version, its perfomance at 1.4 is acceptable with me, with a bit of sharpening its helps,

whether u buy a 1.4 lens u shoot it wide open or stop down, its depends on one own style, theres no right or wrong there...

as for all the reviews is nothin more than just a guideline, research work, something u reflect on before u decide to splurge the cash. Only u know what works for you.

side track back to the TS initial thread,
my choices are- tokina 11-16, nikkor 70-200(either version) and the infamous afs 35 1.8

cheers

I owned both afs and AFD lenses.. For primes I would say AFD is spot on almost 100% but not afs..

My favourite is still the 18-70mm. Though it does not sport a f2.8 aperture, but the range is very useful.

AFS/DX 16-85mm still one of the best lens I have in my inventory...
