Here are some sample pics with the Tokina glass along with some 100% crops for all those who like to look at them...

all shot with a D200, JPEG fine w/o any PS sharpening...

overall built is typical of pro grade tokinas, solid.

Focusing ring feels nice and smooth, focus is not lightning fast but works fine. Motor gives off the usual buurring sound. bokeh as you can see in the flower foto looks creamy. Sharpness seems ok to me, some of the softness at 100% is prob due to slight handshake + lack of USMing.

Only gripe I have with it is how far it extends outwards when shooting macro, but that's a small matter. I also don't fancy non-petal hoods but what the heck, I'm probably not going to use it anyways.

Didn't bother to buy a UV filter for it because the front element is so recessed (like my 50mm f1.8) that it'll probably be quite safe.

Yups... I don't have any other macro lens to pit this against so it's up to you guys to make the decision. I went with tokina coz I feel more comfortable with their built and I can't afford the 105 nikkor... so that's that...

Hope this helps you guys decide...

LOL using D200, shouldn't shoot F18..
should shoot max of F11.
Reason given below. You'll suffer significant loss of details at F18.
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm

enivre, do you mind shooting directly perpendicular to a piece of paper with words, using 1:1, and post results? I went down to CP today, and tested their only copy left (nikon mount) using their store D70s. Don't know if it's me, but the corner sharpness seems to be rather bad wide open.

Below are just my impressions when I went to test which mid length macro lens I wanna get. LOL was like 90% sure of buying the tokina 100mm liaoz, but CP ran out of canon mount, only left 1 at marina side, so i had to test their nikon mount version.

Tokina 100mm @ CP: took and kept 2 images, both images corners are soft. Focus ring VERY tight. Build is fantastic. Feels like a chunk of light weight metal. dunno how to say, but very detailed stepping for macro wise focusing => think you can finetune focusing for distances less than 1m alot more than from 1m to infinity. That takes damn long for AF from macro distance to normal shooting distance. AF is quite accurate at both normal and macro distances. Missed once when i was testing focusing from close distance to far distance to close etc. The limiter doesn't give a very reassuring lock/click for me to know that it's working.

The tamron 90mm @ CP was surprisingly very sharp from corner to corner wide open. Very accurate AF at macro distances. When using as a normal telephoto lens, focus can keep missing and missing and missing. Wow.. this lens LOOKs like the tokina 100mm. Even the limiter looks the same, and works the same.

The canon 100mm USM @ CP seem to be soft. USM is fast and silent, BUT it is definitely significantly slower other USM lenses that I've used. the AF DOES miss a bit at macro distances. from near to far to near to far, focus is super snappy. missed once. Anyway I think I'll wanna go back retest, perhaps @ TCW instead. The images are surprisingly soft. Not consistent with the prev 100mm usm that I've used before *scratch head*

the canon 100mm no USM @ TCW is rather sharp, consistent from corner to corner. Focusing is loud, but quite snappy. Makes me wonder if the lens is on drugs. I don't remember the previous 100mm I've used before being so loud and fast. Even with the limiter on, at macro distances it kept missing for a while until i changed an object (from box barcode to my CF card).

erm... no offence but i don't think taking a photo at CP (considering the lighting condition, and the fact that you most prob were handholding) is a good measure of how sharp a lens is yah? especially not at 1:1 whereby the slightest tilt or movement would render your corners out of focus rather than soft.

as for testing with the paper at 1:1 I'll do it if time permits. Besides, I don't think corner sharpness is an issue when shooting at 1:1 coz 95% of your image will already be OOF because of the shallow DOF...

Aiyah in the end talk so much about the details for what.. i rather go out and take more fotos.. haha... :)

In any case.. when in doubt.. BUY BUY BUY ALL OF THEM!!! haha...

lol wasn't hand holding, put on table shoot one. To remove issue about the dof, i placed the object exactly perpendicular to the camera so that there is no DOF. haha but ya, like i mentioned, it's just test test see see coz me about to buy le mah.. Not dissing the lens, coz I was really 90% sure of bring back the tokina liaoz (cheap and good).
In the end didn't go down marina get the last copy because the 2 pics were visibly soft at the sides, so bring back to check on computer lor.. Flat box, so shouldn't have DOF issue.. so was wondering if the last lens was not so good.. so ask ask see ur images how..

actually bro... at 1:1 it's REALLY hard to get it completely perpendicular... I tried it on some newspaper and even the slightest misalignment will render it OOF... shrug... up to u lah bro...

Yups... happy shopping everyone.. HOHOHO (oops wrong season)!!!

lol true true.. that I'll say ya.. :) gonna test again, and possibly buy it.. the build is just soo impressive.. haha.. and the price is sooo good.

I thought out of stock already? :dunno:
