Tokina 28-70 F2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II User Report

No the f2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II is a older model but I find that it is better. I used it before in the past. It can match the nikon 28-70 quite well and is even sharper than the nikon at f8. Just my two takes.

Looking to get my hands on this lens to play with. Just to confirm with Bros here, is the Tokina 28-70mm f2.8 ATX Pro SV same as the f2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II?

Or any comments from those that used or are still using the Pro SV version? TIA ...

I have this Tokina 28 - 70 but mine is the ATX Pro... Think of this as chocolate, and the Atx pro SV as **** lol. Basically SV stands for "super value" if i'm not wrong. Its the budget version of this lens.

And may I add, that the SV version is a cheaper, lighter and cut-corner version. CC in terms of using cheaper material, single coating on the glass instead of multi-coating. If I observed correctly, most of the cheaper lenses from the independent lens makers give you single coating for a few of the elements.

Well, it is great to know that this lens can match up to the Nikon28-70. Now, if you ask me, would I go for the Nikkor? I would anytime go for a Nikkor if money is not an issue. But for 3x the price, it ain't quite worth it for some very minor advantage if there is at all.

However, for other lenses that are more affordable, I would go for the Nikkor. One example is the Nk70-300VR, for which, there is no third party equivalent. And that lens is so well made, with such great performance and is pretty affordable for a hobbyist like me. One fundamental advantage of a Nikkor is their superior coating, that is visibly 3coats.

I have mentioned the kit lens 18-70 earlier. From my film days, I am still keeping a kit lens Nk28-80F3.3-5.6G - very plasticky, very light and feels cheapo, but has got superb coating and fabulous optical performance.

And then, guess what, I am going to add the Nk50F1.8 to my humble collection.

wad about the sigma 24-70 f2.8 macro? i got mine second hand for $400 and it works brilliantly!

i ended up with a 28-80mm f2.8 Toki instead after waiting for a while for the 28-70 f2.6 to hopefully appear. but no regrets even with the 28-80. will try to post up some non-pp shots soon. its surprisingly sharp at f4 onwards. i personally have no complaints even at f2.8. but some might say its soft.

perhaps only thing is the weight. its heavier than my 70-200 f4 (non-is). and zoom ring slightly tight.

*edit*

as promised...

no sharpening. only convert from RAW to JPEG and minor contrast adjustment plus resize. 28mm, f4.0, ISO 200, 1/1500.

I believe that lens is also pretty well made. As long as you have "ATX-Pro" stated, you won't go wrong... Without the SV haha... For the 28 - 70 i find that its sharpest at the 50mm range. And i've seen pictures of it taken from a nikon F4... The images are really very good... Sadly mine is just kept in the dry cabinet hoping i one day get an FX camera to use it. 28mm just isn't wide enough of a dx body.

.

Bro fibredrive, just like you, I found my Toki so very sharp from F4 onwards. But, I would like to encourage you to shoot at F2.8 as well. I was pretty surprised to find that it performs fabulously wide open too. Just look at what I have posted at F2.8. I would use the F2.8 more often.

Perhaps, you could shoot some shots at F2.8 and show us.;p

Bro, if you do shoot portraits from time to time, this is a very suitable lens. Should make full use of it.

Well, FX camera ain't that out of reach to many amateurs any more.

i actually did some test shots yesterday after work at f2.8 and f5.6. i went home and was a little confused as the 2.8 was as sharp as the 5.6. exif data shows 2.8 and 5.6. however, just to be sure i didn't goof anything up, i brought my camera to work again today and will do some more test shots. because there were times i shot at 2.8 and noticed immediately on screen that it was soft. hopefully, it really is as sharp! hehe. :dunno:

okie here's a sample shot wide open with my toki 28-80mm.

settings - 28mm, f2.8, 1/80, ISO400.
