i think i'll go for the tokina.

i see much more value if
1. i pay less
2. i get better optical quality

than if i were to get sigma for just that extra 2mm.

any opinions?

Agreed. Don't forget tank-like build. Tank-like build. Important.

Actually i will go for the Sigma one anytime because of its 2mm wider. Thatz e reason u buy a wide-angle lens in the 1st place.

If a lens can last more than 3 years, itz good enuf for me.

The only reason i won't buy the Sigma is due to all the 'lemonade' encounters...

haha.. thanks all for your opinions and input.
seems like there's quite different views on both lenses. to put it briefly:

sigma is wider, but construction/build/reliability is inferior as compared to tokina.

haha.. if only tokina built their lenses wider..
10-17 tokina FE? :bsmilie:

One man's meat is another man's poison.

If you really think 12mm is not wide enough (and I can assure you, it's REALLY wide), then get the Sigma. If the 2mm difference seems like a worthy trade-off for lower price, possibilities of getting a lemon, and possible maintenence and service issues, inferior image quality and build, go ahead.

If you really don't mind all the possible problems you may face, I wish you all the best with your purchase.

well, even tank-built will face maintenance and service issues... and btw i wun say that the sigma have got a inferior image quality, some review site have actually reported that tokina sucks at the longer end >20mm, while the sigma is still pretty alright thruout the zoom range.

take this with a pinch of salt. ;)
tokina
sigma
you might want to click on the blur index graph. accurate or not, i wun dare to say as i don own or even use the sigma before.

Anyone has any idea how much is the tokina now? The pricelist seems to be a little outdated I think...

its still more or less the same... $850+/-, lens price doesn't drop like camera...

Hmmm... Time to check with MS then...

Dear all,

Which one do you think is better?

I understand that the Sigma is the widest & Tokina is Quality & Contrast which is competence to the Nikon 12-24 .

I'm still thinking which one to get? Needless to say the Nikkor 12-24mm is the best in this range but the cost is the highest among all.

What I know that the Sigma quality is not as good as Tokina but Tokina CA/flare handling isn't as good as Sigma.

What i seen from various forums they say that the Tokina 12-24 is just like the Nikon 12-24, Constant f/4, Built & Quality

But if i'm going to get either of this 2 which one do you all will recommend?

Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX AF Wide Angle

or

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens

1. What is your current setup?
2. What are your shooting needs?

A useful article at:
http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/nikkor/af/wide_angles_shootout/index.html

In particular, the summary page and recommendations:
http://www.nikonians.org/html/resou...de_angles_shootout/super-wide_shootout_6.html

Quote from the above article:
• Best complement to a 17-55mm: Sigma 10-20mm or Tamron 11-19mm
• Best complement to a 28-70mm: Nikkor 12-24mm or Tokina 12-24mm
• Best “bang for the buck”: Sigma 10-20mm or Tokina 12-24mm

;)

Both are very good.. whichever u go u won't regret it
sigma is very slightly wider.
tokina is sharper corner to corner, better handling/built.

Hi ZD,

Is the Sigma not really very big different in wideness with the tokina? Seriously i have not try this two lense yet. but i heard that the 2mm makes a huge different

Hi,

Was in the same situation as you a while ago, looking for a wide angle lens to complement my 18-200 VR. Tested both of them in OP and found image quality was wonderful for both, nearly impossible to tell apart, but the Sigma was probably just a little sharper to my eyes after some serious pixel peeping. In terms of built quality, Tokina feels more solid probably because it's heavier, but the Sigma's not too bad either, considering that it weighs significantly lighter.

In the end, went with the Sigma just for its 2mm wider range, which is quite significant IMO, especially when the whole point of getting an ultra wide is just that, to get as wide as possible. You probably won't go wrong with either as they're both excellent lenses, I'd suggest you go down to the shop and try both out to see which you prefer.

Regards

Oh and forgot to mention, the Sigma's friendlier with filters as well, no signs of vignetting at 10mm with my B+W UV. Same can't be said for the Tokina, from what I've read before getting the lenses, it can only be used with slim filters. Something to be considered if you're going to use filters on the lenses, which I would recommend as both lenses have their front elements quite far out.
