Yes, after the yen went up, tts calls for the price increase. I did ask MS too b4 the yen went up, was quoted $880. Thus the latter price is prob a mth back i think...
11-16 f/2.8 was my choice over the 12-24 from Tok and Sig. Why ? Cos I shoot landscape at nite..... Couple f/2.8 with high ISO on the D300 .... man.... you don't even need a tripod......
The 10-24 is really interesting thought for normal daytime work. Yet to try it..... But f/2.8 is a world of difference when you shoot under low light.
Your concept of basic landscape photography flawed. You are probably hard pressed to get good DOF with f/2.8. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. But if you're happy with your shots, more power to you.
I still think that nothing beats the tripod for serious landscaping. If you're serious, you'll lug that tripod out.

Haha... Correct ! I am just lazy.... hee.... But then again, I only can do the high ISO thing out with my fren's D300/D700.... My D40x hard pressed.....
Anyways, DOF not so much an issue cos the subjects are usually far.... but when I do need the DOF, yeah, gotta go back to 5.6.... U r right about that one.
