Larsson: Reds can go all the way

Henrik Larsson is hoping for the perfect leaving present - helping the Reds reach the Champions League quarter finals with victory over Lille.

This is the penultimate game before his deal expires on 12 Match, and his final match at Old Trafford in United colours (he'll play for the Europe XI team in the Jubilee Charity Match on 13 March).

The former Barcelona forward knows what it takes to win the European Cup and believes that Sir Alex Ferguson has a squad with the credentials to go all the way.

“It’s a good squad, so everything is possible," he told Manchester United Radio. "Although we can’t forget that we’re playing a good side in Lille.

“But you have to have confidence in your team-mates and a belief that you are able to do something. We will go out there and do our best and hopefully get the result.

“When they were at home they are supposed to attack more, but I think it will be different with us at home. They are a physical team, but Manchester United are used to dealing with that. Lille will not stop, they will work and work away.”

It is the Swede’s last competitive match at Old Trafford, but there's no room for sentimentality, a signal of his professional approach that has impressed everyone at the club.

“I don’t think on the night I will be able to [savour the atmosphere]. I don’t know how much of a part I will play. So I need to concentrate on that. After the match I will try and take it all in. As a footballer you don’t have time to relax, there is always a big game waiting around the corner. One thing is for sure I will be trying to make the most of every minute I have on the pitch.”

Sir Alex: We can win it

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes United can go all the way in the Champions League this season.

United are in Friday's draw at 11:00 GMT for the last eight alongside AC Milan, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia and Roma. And Sir Alex thinks the trophy is there for the taking.

The Reds were not on top form against Lille, but Henrik Larsson’s goal was enough to take United through 2-0 on aggregate.

It is the first time Sir Alex's side have reached the quarter finals for four seasons – the last being when the Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in 2002/03.

“I think being there is important,” said the United manager. “We have had two bad years in terms of not qualifying for the quarter final stage, whereas before that we had an excellent record.

“But the last eight is not our aim. We want to go as far as we can and reach the final. I look at the possible opponents and no matter which team we get, it’s a big game.

“I don’t think there is a lot between the teams that are left in the competition and I think we have as good a chance as anyone."

Sir Alex was pleased with the defensive solidarity shown against Lille, which he says will become more important to the Reds progress in the tournament.

“I was really pleased with the performance tonight, especially defensively," he added. "That has been the key to our results lately. “And it gets tighter the further you go in this competition when it is all down to tactics and the details of planning for games. It’s an area in which English teams are getting better. I think we have got the quality in our squad to go all the way.”

With Henrik Larsson's loan set to end and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recovering from knee surgery, the tabloids are again starting to link United with some of Europe's top strikers.

After rumours resurfaced of interest in Fernando Torres last month, The People have tipped United to be in the hunt for Barcelona goal machine Samuel Eto'o.

The Cameroon striker has been linked with the Nou Camp exit door time and again in recent weeks, and rumours suggest that he covets a move to Old Trafford.

Eto'o isn't the only La Liga star to be on Sir Alex Ferguson's radar, apparently. Racing Santander defenders Ruben Gonzalez and Ezequiel Garay have allegedly caught the eye of several clubs, including United.

Long-term target Nani, of Sporting Lisbon, is also named by several sources, while Arsenal's Manu Adebayor claims he is aware of interest from United.

For Henrik Larsson, his three months at Old Trafford have left an indelible mark on the memory. In this interview with Manchester United Radio he bids farewell to the Reds, admitting he's loved every minute of his time at United...

Have you enjoyed your time here?
I’ve really enjoyed it, but I never thought the time would go this quickly. Time flies by when you’re having a good time. It’s a fantastic club, a great organisation and the players and United supporters have all been fantastic with me.

And on the playing side?
I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Coming here and playing with the quality players at Manchester United has been fantastic, especially at my age! I’m getting on a bit and I never expected to get the opportunity to come and play for this club, but I’ve really enjoyed it.

You make it sound like you’re 65, not 35!
[Laughs] In football, at 35 you’re considered to be well past the sell-by date! I’ve been playing here with 20-year-olds and 21-year-olds. I’m an old footballer at 35. But I’ve enjoyed every minute of the experience.

You’ve been travelling backwards and forwards to Sweden, was that quite tiring?
I’ve only been home two or three times, so it wasn’t tiring for me. But my wife and children have probably travelled over here more than me. So it was tiring for them. But I knew when I signed the deal that that would be part of it, so I’m not going to complain. I’ve enjoyed the experience too much to complain.

Has it lived up to your expectations?
When I arrived I didn’t know how much I would be involved, how many games I would play. I’ve actually played quite a few games which is good. My expectations, I didn’t really have any. I just wanted to approach every chance, every minute on the pitch, with the attitude of enjoying it and making the most of it.

Scoring on your debut at Old Trafford is something to remember…Yeah, it was brilliant. To score on my debut at Old Trafford go on and win the game, it’s a special memory that I will always cherish. For me it was nice, but it’s always most important that the team goes on to win, so that was important to me on my debut.

What’s your fondest memory?
Well, I don’t know. I’ll tell you after Saturday, hopefully the best memory is yet to come. I’ve had so many good memories that I wouldn’t want to state one here and now, but when I look back on my ten weeks here, I will remember my time in Manchester fondly, with lots of great memories. It’s only been a short spell with the club, but it has left a big impression on me.

I dunno man. With the lost of 5 players and team not firing at the moment, not much hope.

I actually think that the CL will be the lowest priority among the 3. The league title had to be the one Man Utd had to win. Esp its at the last stage liao and fighting for it the whole season. The FA cup might help us achieve this in that if both Chelsea and Man Utd qualified for the later stages, our league match against Chelsea will be postponed to the end of the season, 2nd last match. And by then, we might have already seal the title before visiting Chelsea.

But hey, I'll love a treble too! When the odds are against us, we'll come good.

Carrick: We're in with a shout

Michael Carrick feels United can justifiably see themselves as potential winners of this season's Champions League.

Henrik Larsson's header sealed United's passage into the quarter finals with victory over Lille, and Carrick felt the triumph was justified in light of the visitors' stifling tactics.

"They came and put five across midfield and made it very compact and difficult to play our football," he told MUTV. "But I still think we still created enough chances to deserve to win the game. It was just a question of finishing the job off really, and we did it.

"I think we've got as good a chance as anyone else. Once you get to this stage, little things tend to win games and you just need them to go your way at the right time.

"Hopefully we can do it. We've got enough quality, we're always going to score goals and we've been defending pretty well so hopefully we can get that mix right."

Midfield man Carrick also found time to pay tribute to goalscorer Larsson in his last Old Trafford appearance and Alan Smith, with the latter making his first appearance since early November.

"Henrik's buzzing now and it's great to see," he said. "It was a good Old Trafford sendoff for him and I'm sure it's something he'll remember for a while.

"His quality and his attitude and everything is just great to see and especially at his age. He's come in, settled in and what he's done has been fantastic. I'm sure he'll be missed.

"Smudger was brilliant when he came on and he almost scored with a volley so it's great to have Al back and he's going to be a great bonus to us in the run-in."

Larsson: I have to go

Henrik Larsson will return to Sweden next week, despite discussing the possibility of extending his stay at United with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The striker's fine form, together with sudden injuries to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha, had prompted speculation that he could prolong his time in Manchester.

But after scoring the winner against Lille, Larsson told MUTV: "I knew from the beginning, when I signed the contract, that this could be the scenario and I can't complain about that.

"I knew what I got myself into but those are the decisions you have to make in life and you have to stand by those. We had a chat, but he (Sir Alex) respects my opinion and he fully understands why I'm going home.

"I've loved and enjoyed every single moment I've had here playing with United, but at the same time I have a contract with my hometown which I signed a year ago - and I don't think they'll be very interested in letting me go at this point."

Having headed United into the quarter finals of the Champions League, Larsson is confident that his temporary team-mates have the wherewithal to go on and win the tournament.

"The opportunity is there," he said. "It's a quality squad. You always have to respect your opponents but at the same time you have to believe in yourself and the quality.

"You have a few players in the current side who have done it before. There's a lot of experience there and they know how to handle it."

Yeah, even if we are short of players due to the long injury list, at least we must win the EPL title and shut the big mouth of Moan-rinho. We are almost there! Even if we don't win the CL, there is no guarantee that the title will go to Chelski or Liverpool. Other European team that made it to the last 8 are equally strong. At least, there is also hope for the FA Cup. Anything more than 2 titles, to me, is a bonus. Bro, you got it mixed up, lah. Dong was never from Parma. It is Rossi who was loaned to Parma. Dong was with a Belgium club 'cos he could not get a work permit at that time when ManU signed him. :devil:
