i'm still considering whether to get the 2542L.. Tin Cheung quoted HKD4,750 for CASH and HKD4,845 for Credit Card.. small difference if pay by credit card because i did not bring enough cash.. :bsmilie:

Win Shing quoted HKD4,730 though.. but if the price is same even paying by credit card as what some bros mentioned earlier.. then i don't mind getting it from Wing Shing then..

No worries, Win Shing does not have credit card charges.

Just in case you guys do not know......... DBS have many (almost 50 i think) DBS ATMs located in HK (Central, Kowloon, Causeway Bay etc etc etc)

ANOTHER way to get hold of HK$ .........if you have your POSBank or DBS ATM card ...... can just go to any DBS HK ATM and draw HK$......... the equivalent in SG$ will be deducted from your DBS or POSBank account

DBS ATM machines locations in Hong Kong

BUT if you're out of cash and have no choice, i doubt if a transaction fee of a couple dollars or a lousy exchange rate is going to be that big of an issue, no ?

that is mega awesome! if exchange rates are left aside, i think paying by card is still safer for paying cash. incase some crazy fella decides he needs some money and snatches it away..

Well, the scene is quite common in HK. Image the mainland tourists that use RMB to buy Rolex watch. Remember the largest denomination of RMB is $100... Quite a stackful of it if you ask me.

ok now i understand what's the use of the clutch bag for the mainland tourists.. :bsmilie:

For the ones that go to HK to buy properties, the red, white and blue plastic bag is more appropriate... :bsmilie:

Time Square in Causeway Bay. They have the count down there.
There was news of a recent acid attack at causeway bay at around 10pm a few days back. That was the fifth acid attack so far in HKG

Oh man.. i am heading there next mth.
Hope no one here kena when we are there.

Sorry all, felt its kinda appropriate to highlight it here since a few of us will be heading there in the near future. Mods can remove it if deem unfit for this thread.

some idiot/bugger/arse threw a bottle of acid into a crowd at causeway bay 10pm a few days back. That was e fifth case so far in HongKong.

Bu pa yi wan, zhi pa wan yi. It's still acid nonetheless. A woman in the recent act ended up with 2nd degree burns and a few others were injured.

Report on this can be viewed at this link

Wah got such thing ah? Why would people wanna do that ah? Some people just don't deserve to ever be born :(

I'm gonna be at Causeway Bay for the countdown on NYE. I hope nobody throws any kinda acid on the crowd.

well so i guess whoever who's going there for hols, just be careful. especially your belongings. and may i also take this chance to remind all to buy insurance. and also record down the serial numbers of your lenses and cameras in the event something bad happens.

We also got someone here in SG who throw chili bottle and other stuff as well...

No worries, Win Shing does not have credit card charges.

Paying by credit card will not give u a good exchange rate. You may be given a rate of 5.3 instead of the 5.5 u get here from money exchange. I paid my hotel charges by credit card last week in Hong Kong & the rate I was give was only 5.34.

There are always 3 factors when paying by credit card
1) Merchant charges (some don't, most do)
2) Issuing bank transaction fee (for VISA, uob charges 2.5%)
3) Issuing bank currency exchange rate. At most if not all times, it will be lower than usual rates in e market)

Add these % up and ur savings will erode away and might even negate buying it from the country itself.

:)

Hello everyone..

I'm new here (as well as new to shooting, just got a Canon 500D recently).
And coincidentally, I'll be heading to HK next week as well.
Glad I stumbled upon this thread just in time!
Might be looking into some of the recommendations posted here.
Hope to find a good bargain during my trip.

Anyone has any zoom lens to recommend for street photography?
I was eyeing the 17-40mm and the 24-70mm but I realised that they are kinda out of my budget. :embrass:

i've also made some purchases over here using UOB/AMEX credit card and rate is about 0.1842.. which works out to be 5.429.. i guess it's close to the exchange rate of 5.5..

unless you are spending tens or hundreds of thousands.. if not the difference is not that significant.. and you do not need to carry so much cash with you to HK..

CANON 17-55 2.8 IS :P best zoom lens on your 500d. better than 24-70 and 17-40.

If its out of your budget, next best thing is the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC. should be 40-50% cheaper.

A very timely thread indeed. I will go also to Hong Kong 23rd-28th of December to get some camera gears and vaction with family :)
