To buy 7D or 550D?

Thanks everyone, will make trip down to the showroom one of these days and test them out :)

i was having the same problem...but now i finally realise that getting a 550D will be a better choise cos u will still have like $1k for for a better lens if u can manage to get a 7D. Having a better lens always better than a better body.

it deoends... u dont need 1k to get a good lens. the 50mm f1.4 is a workhorse for many pros n it cost only ard 500.

so jus for argument's sake,

7D + 50mm f1.4
vs
550D + 17-55 f2.8

both cost bout the same and both can deliver.

7D is more ex for many reasons.... jus ask yourself if u will justify paying so much more for the reasons like wireless flash, weatherproof, 8fps, better ergonomics, magnesium alloy, fast AF, HUGE viewfinder and also great weight for lenses such as 70-200 f2.8 etc.... as heavier lenses are not so suitable for rebel series cos it will be front heavy.

I switched from a 550D to 7D. Before I bought the 550D, I was going through the spec of the 550D and the 7D as you did. And I also come to the conclusion that saving the extra money can allow me to buy better lens. and i was quite convince that I made the right choice.

So, I bought the 550D. Three weeks into using it, i went for a friends baby shower and over there I tried his 7D. When I was using the 7D, i just keep wanting to take pictures because the 7D does not hesitate when taking pictures of spontaneities. With the 550D, I guess my reaction was a bit slower and sometime I just missed that sweet smiles across the room.

On the other hand the 550D is much lighter than the 7D. couple with the normal 18-200mm lens, you basically do not have to bother about the small grip because you will be balancing the load on your left hand, just like you will do with a rifle.
Even with the lighter weight, the 550D feels heavy too if you need to hang on your neck for and hour or two. For the 7D, I bought the hand strap just to be sure the load doesn't slip off my grip.

The 550D has a sensor that turns off the LCD when you places your eyes near the viewfinder. I like this feature because I just have to shift my head backwards to check or adjust the setting without moving my camera much. This is not available on the 7D. But the 7D has a full time LCD that display those information, but you have to look from the top to see the setting. i.e. you have to move the camera position.

Menu-wise, I feel the 550D is easier to navigate than the 7D. For example, it is easy to access the menu to do exposure compensation on the 550D, but on the 7D, I keep fogetting how to do it(I have to admit I am a slow learner)

In Live view mode, both 550D and the 7D are no difference in focusing.(quite a bit of hunting before the focus is locked)

Memory-wise, if I am not wrong, the 550D will support the latest version of SD card, up to 1 tera-byte.(very ex). Locally, smaller size SD card is cheaper than compact flash.

Sound-wise: If you are particular about it, the shutter sound of the 550D is different from the 7D. 7D has a faster shutter sound than the 550D. This can be attributed to the faster shutter speed.

Feel good factor: The 7D will definitely give you the feel good factor.

Good luck shopping :)

Hi friends,

I am considering to upgrade my camera body, currently a 400d. But I can't decide whether to get a 7D or a 550D (taking 50D out of the option as it does not have video function)... hope to get some advice and comments from you peeps, thanks :)

@mavewhite, from your review, I dont find the reason why you change to 7D, except the "feel good factor"

Thanks everyone, I get to see more aspects now :)
Another concern of mine is that I got small hands, wonder if 7D will be too heavy for me/ hard to grip after holding for a long time... but on the other hand, like what you all have said, rebel series may result in front heavy (lens heavier than body), which will affect the balancing...

Anyway, I should be going down to Vivo Canon showroom this weekend to test out both models. Hopefully I can make a decision by then, haha.

What I like about the 7D is its ability to focus and take a shot faster than the 550D. To me this is very important because sometime haven't you wished that the camera can work faster just to take a picture of a moment that will slip away in a split second? ;)
Might be my own imagination that the 7D was faster. But it certainly felt like this.

Feel good factor? I'm guilty :sweatsm:

fast = shutter speed? or Focus speed? I reckon if Lens also taking a great share on focusing speed

A faster shutter is not exactly a feature.

Well, I think it's down to the question whether you need the extra features on a 7D? Or is it more justified to spend to additional money (from choosing a 550D over 7D) on a better.

Or, even a 50D will do.

For 7D, the AF speed is good enough to shoot sports? can share your experience?

if want fast AF, go for 1series.... thats the fastest from canon, as they claimed.

I have the 550D currently and am tempted to upgrade to the 7D ... . :)

I have tried the 7D briefly and it feels really solid.

Anyone knows what's the latest street price for the 7D?

check B&S, many ppl selling 7D nowadays.. i am tempted to sell my camera and buy 5dmk2 instead

Tks buddy. Will wait for you to advertise your 7D at a lelong price on B&S. ;)

Don't think it will lower the price by much as a 7D cost around $2.2K to $2.3K for a new piece with POP for a 580EXII for 599. In BNS they are sell for around $2K which is only like $200 less to me that is like not much.

i have the same thoughts too, 550D feels small in my palm as i have long fingers.

i too cant go back to rebel series, the feel is just not right anymore, haha. given a 2nd chance, i will still want a 7D.
For once, I am glad I have small hands. :D
