Time to go FF???

17-200 1.8L would be improbable. If they DID make it, you probably won't be able to carry it at all. But I get what you mean.

Canon won't shoot itself in the foot by killing off the EF-S series. What I think is this, the current situation we're having with two semi pro and pro bodies is going to continue as the reach and affordability of the crop bodies is tempting, especially the reach. The entry level SLRs will continue to be crop bodies to entice people in. What I'm really glad is that Canon was forward looking enough to see that FF was the way to go and actively went to that direction. For me, I really wanted the power of digital FF and chose Canon over Nikon exactly for that.

Good job Canon!

Samuel

Hehe sam. You know what I always say to you. Want FF, shoot film lah! (just that it's not digital)

That aside, I would also like to add that there will always be a group of photographers (birders for instance) that will want the additional crop alongside a high-res sensor, so I'm sure Canon will never fully kill off the 1.6x range of cameras.

Better still. If the new one comes out, the current 5D should have a further price reduction which is an advantage for me. :)

Two 10D users waiting for 5D/5DMKii .... ;p
In fact, i really dun think 5D will further drops below 2k . . . . I actually hope to buy 5D MK II from BHphoto ( cheaper by S$1k compared to local shop ). Eg: Current 5D selling about S$3.8k in local shop, but u can get it at S$1k cheaper if u buy online from US.

Will 5D become a cheap FF body if 5D MK II launch in Sept? If yes, EFS len is going to end soon.... What i can see now is EF-S lens price dropping very fast.. Luckily i dun invest in EF-S lens... ;p

That's part of the reason why i've a 10D, so i won't get any EF-S lenses. But for now, i'll still use my 10D of cos until 43 days from now.

there's no way Canon would do this. Would you start developing an EFS line solely for crop cameras only to stop producing crop cameras?? I'm pretty sure the crop body cameras are here to stay. I doubt there'll be a budget FF (though sure, hurray if there is one). And all because really, it's all about money, man. What kind of profits would canon make if they released a budget FF? No one would buy EFS lenses, fewer people would upgrade to a 5D (or its equivalent) and less profits will be realised. Even if canon had the technology (and i bet they do) to build a 17-200mm 1.8L lens with prime lens sharpness, they wouldn't, because then what the hell would they do with all their other lenses that go up to 200mm??

I'm sure you've heard of how they make printers - they devolve them. i.e. they make the best printer possible, and then remove parts and functions for the consumer market.

Same as making lightbulbs that last forever. anyway. beside the point.

Yep, I also doubt they'll so fast dissolve the crop sensor line-up.Anyway crop sensor too has it's market - birders and sports will vouch for crop sensors cos it gives them a telephoto advantage. That's why I put in brackets "Dunno how long" when I said FF is the future. Lol

I agree, hence I like the arrangement now with two semi pro bodies, the 40D and 5D. In fact, I might consider picking up a 5D mk I or II body to complement my 40D. But small sensor tech has really improved tremendously... the 40D's sensor stands a fighting chance, though not surpassing, the 5D.

Anyway calab, my film FF is a 6x6 square which beats anything Canon has to offer as of now.. :P!

bernstein1234, calebk, thanks for the information. Appreciate it. :)

Just to add to what they've said.. my favorite part about the 5D is the huge bright finder. :)

Optical viewfinder size for SLR's is directly related to film size. It makes the shooting experience so much more pleasant. My Pentax645 has a slight advantage in this department due to the gigantic size of the 645 film frame.

I also like being able to use certain lenses at their intended AoV, such as the 24-105. There is no EF-S equivalent that would give me a similar AoV and zoom range. To do that we'd need a EF-S 15-67mm f/4 IS, but none seems to be forthcoming. This of course is largely a matter of personal preference.

After i get my 5D, i'll be lugging 2 bodies out for shoots. The 17-40 on the 5D while the 70-200 on the 10D.

Have you heard what Canon's camera tech guru, Chuck Westfall, said about FF and crop?

Rumour of 5D MK II is getting closer... next month ..
PPl starts to throw their 5D to get 5D MK II?
And also ppl starts to throw their 30D and 40D to get a 5D..

If u buy online @ US, u could even get a brand new 5D at S$2800....

Shall i wait for 5D Mk II? ??? If 5D MK II priced at less than S$4K ( possible? ) , you think worth to wait till next month . . . .?

rumour... will forever be rumours....

and forget it...ibelieve 5Dmk2 will be priced 4k and above. for being something classed between XXD and 1D/s

so...... why wait.if u need FF. get 5D. it is still a very capable camera to what i know. i asked this question before.

throw away?
where u throwing urs?
i go pick:bsmilie:

oei, u oredi have ur 1Ds...dun be greedy...

give others like me a chance to go pick...:sweatsm:

I wouldn't bother buying online in US then pay for shipping and GST when a grey set now brand new is around that price already?

Correct, the reason why i'm getting the 5D in early July is that i just need a FF DSLR which is the cheapest, don't like heavy ones like the 1Ds series and have a budget of around $4K. If the 5D II is within the budget or maybe a few hundred more, mght as well go for the newer one. Else, it's 5D cos i'm not the sort who must upgrade to newest everytime, as long as the DSLR works for me.

I'm not saying that the 10D is bad. In fact, it's an awesome 1.6x body and i love it, especially for its famous quiet mirror slap. I plan to go FF is becos i need to upgrade as i was initially from a film SLR background and i still prefer its large viewfinder and dynamic range.

So after the upgrade, i'll just keep my 10D as a spare in case any one goes to the service centre, can still shoot. :)

hey, with FF, aren't u considering getting the 85mm f/1.2 to go with ff body? ~~ ;p

Nope. On a FF body, it's an eye-view angle lens and is also gd for portraits. So i get the best of both world's with the 50mm.

so 50mm is gd for you on 1.6x and ff body~~

Yeah. BTW i've asked CP Marina Square for the price of the 5D yesterday and it dropped $230! Was $3830 and now is $3600 inclusive of GST! Probably's becos of the GSS.

Yeap the DOF rendered by FF (and to a lesser extent, 1.3x crop) is shallower, thus rendering more 'pop' to the subject. I'm not sure how exactly it works either. Also, with FF, you are essentially getting the true AoV that your lens is supposed to give you.

Calebk,
I am not sure if my understanding is correct....
Assuming to use a compact cam and a FF to take a picture of a person's full body. The compact cam would need to use a relatively wider angle because of its smalle sencor size, whereas the FF, since it has a larger sensor size, a relatively longer focal length would be enough to accomodate the same person, therefore, relatively, the compact cam would produce much deeper DOF whereas the FF could achieve shallower DOF.
