Thoughts on Price of OMD :)

Indeed Oly price drop rather quickly, If I remembered correctly, when E PL2 came out, the price was like 890SGD. 6 months later Courts sold EPL2 kit for about 599 SGD on Groupon, and PL3 was not even announced then.

Anyway, I do not think the E-M5 price is bad at IT show if you find that you will use the weather-sealed MMF.

Consider that best price you can get now is about $1700 but without the MMF3. Then, $1888 with MMF3, plus pay by credit card (Amex also can), and instalment plan (if u so wish) is quite OK lar. ie. You basically pay $188 for the MMF3 plus credit card's 2%.

Also, someone also worked out, if you buy from Amazon at USD1299 - this calculates to SGD$1766 after GST. You WILL have to pay GST unless u got a friend to mule it back for you from the USA. If you ship it in, then you need to factor in shipping costs which will be about $1800 total. For the additional MMF3, this price is actually not bad.

I totally agree with this. :D

That's the result of overproduction and stupidly short product cycles.

You have to understand there are strong competitions coming from many mirrorless cams and also direct competition from Panasonic cams too

No lar....at 2 months it was in the mid-600s....not low 600s. :-)

$1,700 is with MMF3. So if I sell it brand new at a discount, say $150, it will bring the kit price down to $1,550 (or US$1,230).

$1700 with MMF3 ......

I really don't care too much about the 12-50 ..... do u guys think street price of $1200 for body alone a decent price? What would be a likely street price for the 12-50?

The 12-50 is already ard 580-590 in shops - this makes the kit lens bundle with EM-5 quite good value, esp those who get it with MMF-3.

Different people will have different opinions on whether it is worth it - we can't make the decision for you. Ultimately, we are not using the camera, you are :p Go with your wallet if really cannot decide, if not, there is always the BnS section :)

where sell $1700 with mmf3???

With better and more features now incorporated in new cameras, a change in pricing is expected.
The first to buy them will therefore pay a premium.

There is always an "early adopter tax" on the newest and greatest products. Just that the newest today won't be anymore after a couple of months, so the "tax" simply shifts onto the newest products of the time.

The "tax" on the E-M5 is already not too bad considering you can sell the bundled MMF-3 and kit lens to bring the body price down. Try comparing to buying the latest i-gadget!

tsk tsk tsk... I don't wanna go heavy handed with infractions and stuff kids... behave! Else you will quickly find yourself joining dpreview forums.

yeah you are right, but that does leave some uncomfortable feelings to the early adopters who are usually Oly's loyal users.

At least you don't see Sony NEX drop that quickly, or any of the entry level dslrs where competition is even more fierce

With pricing, it's not a simple matter of dropping price due to passage of time, or with competition, or when stocks pile up. There is probably strategy to it. For example, Olympus will usually price 1 particular model way below the competition, especially during the big shows, or even during normal promotions. This could be EPL1, EPL2 or EPM1, depending on which model they single out as the low-cost, entry level model that they want to encourage pple into buying an m4/3 (and adopting the system).

Sony on the other hand, may want to keep their prices relatively constant for a different strategy. The benefits are that pple will perceive Nex as a premier brand among the mirrorless. Also, potential buyers are more confident that prices will stay high so if they choose to, they can sell their Nex away later (eg when upgrading) and recover more of their initial costs.

Noticed that the us / canada side is offering a free accessory of your choice (between the FL-300R wireless Flash, the MMF-3 or the MMF-2 adapter), despite their lower selling price, which really tempting for potential buyers (including myself)! Really makes me wonder why can't olympus at this side of world do something similar or better? Any comments on what is going on?

The size of the US/Canadian market is probably one big reason. Higher volume means retailers there can accept lower margins. That's my guess anyway.

In that case selling price in mainland china should be super cheap then :) Could it be other factors like tax and exchange rate etc.?

Size of market is just one possible reason. There are others like those you have suggested. China population may be large, but disposable income is small on average n hence the addressable market while large may not be big as a proportion of its size.
