Why not a E-M5 package? You get the 45-150mm lens free which stretches your focal length beyond the 70D and still cheaper than the Canon.
It would have been a fairer comparison for 70D pair with 17-55 F2.8 (which is definitely more ex than the E-M1 bundle) if you are considering the 12-40 ha.
Comparing pro and enthusiast cam is pretty bias. Further, the lens is 2.8 while the other is kit lens.
IMO, if undecided, it's better to take cheaper option. Save the money on other things.
If considering m43, em5 is still a very capable cam. If insist on em1, can consider cheaper lens. 12-50mm

Using the 12-50 /3.5-6.3 on the EM-1 is a bit like .... Umm , driving a Ferrari in Singapore. Always gonna stop at a traffic light before u can enjoy the full power of the engine.
I'd rather use the Pana 14-45 on the EM-1 instead if it comes to using kit lenses.
I didn't get the 35-100/2.8 as I felt the range is too limiting . Will get the 40-150/2.8 instead. I can live with my 12-35. I am only interested in the HDR feature in the EM-1 which the EM5 doesn't have, the rest of the features are improvements which I don't really need but still pay a premium for them. I don't even shoot 1/1000s or have any legacy lens. I'll skip this sensor upgrade.

m4/3 made me fall for primes, while 4/3 showed me how zoom lenses are done (12-60 + 50-200).
I like the way m4/3's pace of growth now. Its exciting and it shows, most importantly, progress and innovation (no matter how incremental) which I felt was non existent way back when i started with the e510 up until the e30.
As for shopping, now is surely a good time to hope for a fat bonus LOL. I do not have the super 'I want that' feeling with the em1 that I had when the em5 is released so I'm not sure if I'll buy in. I've also tried the GH3 since i recommended it to a friend who is into video and my first impressions of the handling was wow i miss this grip, I'm using the em5 which for all intents and purposes is fine for me up until i touched a proper dslr form factor again. I still preferred he em5 over gh3 though.
Now the gx7, what a beauty (subjective) this will probably be the camera that I'll buy, if I will buy, because of two things - price and I have none of the ZD lenses already.
right now I'm a happy camper with the 9-18,12-50,17,45,75 + em5 and feel my wallet can weather this blizzard of temptations like a hibernating polar bear, stored with fat. I'll lose it when the 40-150 comes out though..
all that said I like the em1 and think its a step in the right direction for Oly (and the whole m4/3 + the now deceased 4/3), i hope they wont face more financial troubles along the way so they can keep up with the work.

I bought the E-M5 for my Italy trip - no regrets there, despite suffering the slow AF with the ZD 14-54mm II and ZD 9-18mm. It would have been perfect if the EM1 was available back then.
No hurry to change bodies at the moment. My next purchase will be the Leica 25mm f1.4 (or Sigma 50mm f1.4
