Club captain Steven Gerrard was runner-up, with 8.2 per cent of the votes while Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano was a close third with 6.9 per cent.

The poll, organised by the club's website named Ryan Babel as young player of the season with 80 per cent of the votes, ahead of Lucas in second spot.

Another striker - Hungarian youngster Krisztian Nemeth - won the reserves player of the season award.
