If the endless sniping and carping at Anfield wasn't enough, Liverpool fans might want to leave The Times well alone this morning.

They claim that the club may have to sell Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel if they can't pay back the £31.5million loan taken out to buy them last summer.

The paper reports (and we apologise for the upcoming financial nonsense): 'Liverpool entered into an 18-month loan agreement with interest of 9 per cent - £2.8 million a year - with a letter of credit to pay back the £31.5 million at the end of the period.

'Should Liverpool be unable to pay back or refinance the loan, banks could force the sale of Torres and Babel, who was also included in the smaller refinancing package.'

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez must decide whether to risk his star striker Fernando Torres at Fulham on Saturday.

Torres is one goal away from equalling the record for most goals scored by an overseas player in his debut Premier League season.

But Benitez is certainly considering resting a host of players ahead of next week's Champions League semi-final.

Last term Benitez was in an almost identical position going into the away trip to Fulham, and managed to upset former Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock with his team selection at Craven Cottage.

And this season it is Bolton's Gary Megson who has already called for Benitez to field his strongest side against their relegation rivals.

Benitez, of course, will be already planning for next Tuesday's semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Anfield, and that priority could well see him rest some senior men against the Cottagers.

The Spaniard was non-committal on the issue, but it must not be forgotten how single-minded Benitez was then, using veteran Robbie Fowler, along with youngsters Gabriel Paletta and Emiliano Insua in the match.

He says: "OK, we will think about Chelsea but for us to be in the top four is really important, and we will have enough energy to play against Chelsea on Tuesday.

"Sometimes it's not easy for players to concentrate with a Champions League semi-final so near, but they know how important it is to finish in the top four so hopefully they will be focused.

"They will be concentrated and then hopefully we can talk about two victories in both games."

Last season Liverpool went to Fulham four days after they had beaten Chelsea at Anfield in the Champions League semi-final. This time it is three days before their first leg clash.

Fulham v Liverpool​

An unfamiliar away victory, at Reading last week, gave Fulham renewed hope of Premier League survival. They are two places and four points short of safety, with four to play.

Liverpool need five points from their four remaining matches, to be guaranteed fourth place and a Champions League qualifying round spot next season.

The Cottagers are seeking to end the longest current run in the Premier League without successive victories. It is now 68 games (34 this season, and 34 last), since they last strung two league victories together, beating Sheffield United (h) and Newcastle (a) on 26 August and 9 September 2006 respectively.

Anything less than maximum points from their last four fixtures, will ensure Fulham end on their lowest ever total points for a Premier League season. Defeat here would be their 1,000th league loss since World War Two.

Liverpool have won three more away than Fulham have managed at home (seven to four). Both clubs have drawn an unsurpassed 12 Premier League matches this season.

Fulham are pursuing a hat-trick of home Premier League victories over Liverpool, having won the last two 2-0, and 1-0.
