i find the new 24-105 too slow. when i go overseas, i like to take macro there as those flowers cannot be found here, and occasionally i take the locals there close up, so i would rather have a 24-70 f2.8

Ahh... 70-300 DO lens.

It looks small and light enuff. How much u paid for it?

Paid just above 2k for it. So far it has not let me down. Personally i feel the DO is one of the better lenses to have.

*Ouch*
That's even crazier den the 24-105 f4L's pricing.

Think I'll go for 70-200 f4L instead.

i second that, love my 70-300

3 weeks backpacking in burma, all i brought (and found i needed) was a 35-70mm. Wish i'd brought a flash though. unless you're shooting birds with a tripod, i think 400mm is overkill, and it's just dead-weight you have to manpack along. will be bringing up a 35-70 to tibet in a week, but this time think i might bring a polaroid as well just for kicks and to be friendly with the locals.

generally, 20D with a 18-125 for travelling. This could cover most of my shooting needs.

agree... y carry so many lens? dont forget u still need to carry a tripod...
just sling a 350d(small, light & good pic quality) and a 18-125 or 18-200 will do.

My choice:

Canon XT
Canon 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon 35 f/2
Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM (latest, non-DO version... not sure if it's available in Singapore yet)

NB: The new 70-300 lens is very light, black (so inconspicuous) and small (compared to the Ls). Optically, it is up there... really excellent... sharp wide open at ALL focal lengths. Beats the c*** out of the DO lens IMO.

For me,
350D with 17-85mm IS and 70-300 IS DO, plus the light 50mm f1.8.
This is assuming the trip is a holiday trip with phototaking along the way and not a trip purposely made for shooting.
I would want to travel as light as possible.

5D + EF 28-300mm L IS USM !

Why not try a 14mm and a 400mm instead of those trinity lenses? With trinty lenses, you restrict the range of focal length_they only go up to 200mm. The price of these two lenses is almost the same as the trinity group.

my travel combo has always been (till the 5D came along):

1. 1D2
2. 16-35
3. 24-70
4. 70-200
5. 550EX
6. Manfrotto 440 tripod
7. whole bunch of ND grads, polarisers, CF cards
8. portable hard disk

wow
even on short trip?

If i had all the Canon stuff that i can afford, it will be

- Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT
- EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
- EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
- EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
- EF 2X II Extender
- Canon Speedlite 580EX Flash

The 2X extender will allow the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM to become a 140-400mm f5.6 IS when a need arise. :)

This thread has been very informative.

I am going for a quick trip and recce to a village in cambodia. The stay there is 1 day only (at the village) and i will be working while at the village. Hence the purpose is not photography. Having said that, good photographs will be a good selling point if i want to "promote" what i do.

I have only the following and weight may be a factor too as we are carrying some supplies by boat only (dont know the size).

300D
kit lens (which i like)
50mm 1.8
75-300mm III
tripod
slave flash

what do you all think?

husaini

husaini, i think it's fine. if it's too much you can consider leaving the tripod

most times, i make do with just a single 18-125 ;p for an upcoming trip, i'll probably bring along the ef-s 10-22 and 20/1.8 in addition.

...it makes me wonder if how many of you will choose this combination of equipment [24-105 IS, 100-400 IS] for outdoor/ travelling?
if you want my view, it's a "general purpose" range of focal lengths. but it doesn't mean that it suits everyone's photography.

if (IF!) i had the 5D (it would mean i was rich!), i'd get the 35mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm macro. that's all i need for travelling. need the big aperture at those focal lengths, and that's it.
