My Nikkor 17-55mm is pretty sharp at f/2.8 at all focal length from 17mm through to 55mm. That much I can tell you after shooting various events at wide open apertures because the lighting is so nice I thought I prefer to do available light than let the flash spoil everything. Of cause I do use flash most of the times but a photographer has to be decisive to know when to use flash and when not to.

When closed down to f/5.6 or f/8 the lens is perfectly tack sharp. The only time my lens is not sharp is because the camera back focuses on the subject.

is the lens focusing fast enough under low light?

got try before some 3rd party lens 2.8-4, not the constant one, but was not fast enough for event shoot. therefore was trying to find out is the 17-55 nikkor is fast enough for event shoot a not. it is a nice range to cover but performance wise, is it an fast focusing lens?
never use before so like to find out more.

if its AFS Nikkor, and topped with a pro body, the focusing will be faster.

don't understand ur meaning of 'fast' in this instance.
f2.8-4 seems pretty good to me. for use in an event, ISO400 or 800, with aperture at f5.6 or f4, i think pretty good for wide angle coverage.

AFS17-55 f2.8 is considered a professional grade lens. it is fast, f2.8, and focusing is really dependent on body used.

i think u might be ill-informed on the term 'fast'. or perhaps ur understanding of 'fast' is totally different from some of us here.

my question is whether the 17-55 nikor lens can focus quick in low light a not. some lens is slow when light is not favourable. focusing n focusing, too slow.

Every glass is slow when there's not enough light.

fast or not, is mainly dependent on ur camera body and the AF motor that drives it.

since this is a f2.8 lens, and its AF-S, and if u mount it on a D2X, 100% fast. in poor lighting condition, it'll be still faster than ur average D200, D70...etc.etc.

anyway, like wat ESPN said, all lenses hunt in poor lighting condition.

in no lighting environment, use speedlight can still help you to focus the objects (quite fast). another usage of the speedlight.
you can mount the speedlight and disable the fire.

i don't think that the replies are that fantastic or 'deep'. if u do a'lil more research on Nikon cameras and Nikkors as well as previous postings in CS, u'll find ur answer.
