Thinking of migrating to Canon

Hello,

I've been using both Nikon (1988-2001, 2009) and Canon (2001-2008).

Here's the thing about Canon & Nikon:

1. Canon in Singapore has the absolute best servicing and professional photographer support. 1st class and repair pricing is cheaper than Nikon. This is what's keeping most pros with Canon here in SG.

2. Canon DSLRs has way better skin tones than Nikon without the need for tweaking.

3. Canon had really bad years (in sales) starting with the 1D3. Their denial of AF issues in the 1D3 cost them dearly.

4. I switched partly due to the fact that 20-30% of my action shots on 5D was out of focus, especially the critical ones. When I heard that the 5D2 had the same AF unit as the 5D, I was really surprised.

5. Read this site about Canon, http://fakechuckwestfall.wordpress.com/ . Extremely accurate.

6. I am on the D3x now. 99% of my action shots are in focus. The 24-70mm & 50mm I have does not exhibit any front nor back focusing issues. The 24-70 has very little or no distortion and corners are extremely sharp.

7. Most Canon wide zooms (L or non L) have horrible distortion and corners are soft on full frame.

Sad to say also, but I also found Canon is going to worse and worse (that's why I sold my 70-200 f2.8 L). For the recent case, my friend's 7D pop-up flash stop working. Although CSC can repair it, but there is a big question about their QC.

Well said and rather true. Point (4) is related to what Chicklit says below.

The center AF point of 5D is in fact pretty good. The only issue is that you must bring ALL your lenses + camera to the service center to have their AF calibrated against each other. This is needed because of poor Canon QC for products straight out of the factory. Nikon has fewer issues in this department. Of course, you must first get the Canon technicians to agree the AF is unacceptable... that is the tough part regardless of how courteous they are.

If you are lucky enough to get hold of good copies of your Canon camera and lenses, you better hold on to them for dear life 'cos they are hard to come by.

Nothing new here. Canon products are supposedly made in Japan but their QC is AWFUL. Nikon products are made in Thailand (except for D3/D3X/D3s) but have fewer QC problems. I suspect Japanese workers are more expensive, so in order to cut costs, Canon decides to reduce the size of their QC department. This is purely conjecture on my part but seems reasonable.

Generally speaking,

Either Brand A or brand B will get the job done.
Excluding specific cases,
if the shooter cannot get the job done,
its the shooter most of the time.

If you are starting fresh, think carefully.
Else make sure you can justify the reason in a rational way before jump ship.

One thing i dont like about Nikon lense,
they require 2 weeks for lense calibration(unless you are their value member),
while some 3rd-party can offer same day svc.

Ewww... I did not know that.

Reali? I gotten back my 18-200 & 80-200 within 3 days. I'm a normal walking customer.

i think this is like toyota vs honda.... really demands what u need.. no one brand is really that superior over the other.. just what u appreciate more which will let u go to that brand

i am sure users of olympus and pentax also got their personal reason too...

How true that is for #4 and #6. i have friends on 5dmk2 and they whined 50% of the time when taking action shots with regards to oof subjects as the body jus can't nail the focus.
In terms of AF,lens coverage and service quailty and everything in general, I really impressed with what Nikon has got to offer. Its serves well in most apsect.

Hello Numnumball,

A lot of things have changed. In 2000, Nikon (under Shriro then) had really expensive repairs. They also had bad QC on the 80-200AFS (bad vignetting, etc) amongst other lenses.

Canon's pro-active stance on gaining share in the pro market in Singapore were largely due to the promises they made to professionals, ie fast repair times and great service vs Nikon. They also had really great bodies like the EOS1Vs, 1DS, etc back then. The AF was spot on and dead accurate on the 1 series.

I've always been led to believe that the 5D/5D Mk2 is not meant or designed for sports or action photography.
